The research student program at the Walt Lab offers trainees an immersive, hands-on research experience focused on biomarker detection and assay development, with applications in neurodegenerative disease research and related fields. Research Students are introduced to foundational and progressively advanced lab techniques and scientific inquiry within a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment. Through direct experimental training, participation in lab meetings, departmental seminars, and one-on-one mentoring, trainees will build a strong foundation in experimental design, data analysis, and technical skills, preparing them to make meaningful contributions to scientific research. The student will: Understand basic of machine learning classification in the context of basic metabolic testing and clinical blood counts to hematological diseases and pregnancy-associated disorders; develop pipelines for data cleaning, data handling, and their integration with classifiers. As time permits: gain familiarity with protein quantification using ultra-sensitive techniques such as the HDX and SPX. Be able to perform and understand design principles of next-generation EV analysis, assay validation, and single-molecule enzymology.
