This position is for a Co-op Research Student I, offering a comprehensive learning experience with continued career development and enrichment associated with an academic program. It is ideal for self-motivated mechanical engineering students who wish to work with a mechanical design team responsible for the development of laser system components, scientific diagnostic instruments, and vacuum systems. The role involves applying classroom theories to real-world professional situations, performing assigned tasks under mentor guidance, and utilizing specialized instrumentation and equipment. The student will also participate in professional development seminars and contribute to team meetings, while maintaining a safe and orderly work environment.

Requirements

  • Enrollment in an academic program that allows academic credit for working required
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience

Nice To Haves

  • Creative problem solving and analysis preferred
  • Experience with CAD software and an understanding of machining / fabrication processes preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Completes a comprehensive learning experience while receiving continued career development and enrichment in association with an academic program.
  • Applies theories learned in a classroom setting to real world, professional situations.
  • Observes and performs a diverse array of assigned tasks, activities, and projects under guidance from one or more professional mentors.
  • Abides by all policies, procedures, and work regulations as defined by the supervisor and/or co-op facilitator.
  • Performs all assignments in a professional and businesslike manner.
  • Practices the utilization of specialized instrumentation, equipment, software, and other technologies.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe work environment and reports any concerns to supervisor and/or co-op facilitator.
  • Periodically seeks and receives feedback on job performance.
  • Participates in seminars or workshops designed to develop professional and scientific skills, including effective strategies for project design, time management, data analysis, and communication.
  • May prepare and deliver formal written reports or oral presentations.
  • Attends and contributes to departmental and/or team meetings.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with team members and professionals in the designed field of work.
  • Other duties as assigned.
