About The Position

The CNC Setup position is responsible for operating a CNC machine safely, producing quality products, and meeting production expectations. This role involves setting up machines with tools, fixtures, and work zeros, obtaining first piece approval, and working with the Quality Control department to ensure proper inspection plans are in place. The CNC Setup will also collaborate with programmers to resolve technical issues, mentor operators on other shifts, and document work accurately. Additionally, the role requires adherence to safety protocols, including the FOD program and machine interlocks, and a commitment to continuous improvement of processes and the QMS. The position also involves handling inspection equipment with care, maintaining a clean work area, and demonstrating punctuality and a positive attitude. In times of reduced workload, the CNC Setup may be assigned other duties such as cleaning, operating machines, manual machining, tool management, or inspecting production parts.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and ability to properly interpret customer drawings, GD&T, work instructions, and in-process inspection plans.
  • Ability to use measuring tools including, but not limited to, micrometers, calipers, thread gages, bore gages, dial and test indicators and height gages.
  • Ability to mount and load tooling, fixtures, vises, jaws and touch off all tooling, set offsets and set work zeros.
  • Ability to produce a first piece inspection part.
  • Basic trouble shooting of speeds & feeds, tool application and wear.
  • Ability to train operators to run and inspect parts approved for production.
  • Have basic measuring tools: Caliper, Micrometer, Test Indicator, etc.
  • Only use calibrated measuring equipment whether personal or company supplied. If not in proper calibration notify quality department to have calibrated immediately.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a CNC machine in a safe manner, producing quality product and meeting production expectations.
  • Utilize CNC programs, set up tools, fixtures, work zeros and set up machines with first piece approval.
  • Work with QC to get the first piece approved and in-process inspection plans in place.
  • Request all inspection or set up gages required to check parts at the machine.
  • Work with programmers for any technical issues or trouble shooting when needed.
  • Ensure that machine access door interlock is operable, as access door should remain locked during machine operation.
  • Mentor operators (all shifts) to properly run production and document inspection, as required.
  • Document work on inspection plans and the ERP system as applicable to maintain traceability and records.
  • Identify continuous improvement of processes and understand the contribution to the effectiveness of the QMS.
  • Communicate any concerns or issues related to production of parts, safety, and quality to supervisor.
  • Ensure that the FOD program is being adhered to during production activities.
  • Handle inspection equipment, machines and parts in a manner that will not cause damage or compromise integrity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including cleaning, operating machines, manual machining, tool management, and inspection of ongoing production parts, in the event of lack of work or assistance needed in another department.
