About The Position

Northrop Grumman’s Space Sector is hiring a CNC Programmer 3 at its Commerce, California site. This specialized role converts complex 3D engineering designs into numerical code for multi-axis machining centers, using CAD/CAM software to produce aerospace components from materials such as titanium, Inconel, and aluminum alloys while maintaining very tight tolerances. The position develops and verifies NC programs for multi-axis mills, lathes, and mill-turn machines; analyzes CAD models and blueprints to determine machining sequences and work-holding strategies; and supports production through setup documentation, shop-floor troubleshooting, prove-outs, and operator mentoring. The team works a 9/80 schedule.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and at least 4 years of experience developing CNC programs for multi-axis machines in an aerospace environment.
  • Deep knowledge of CAD software such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks and CAM software such as Mastercam or Gibbs CAM.
  • Expert ability to interpret complex technical drawings and GD&T symbols.
  • Strong foundation in trigonometry and geometry for calculating cutting paths and angles.
  • Deep understanding of G-code, M-code, and post-processing.
  • Expertise in machining aerospace alloys, including titanium, Inconel, and aluminum.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with AS9100 standards and export control regulations (ITAR/EAR).
  • An associate’s degree in a mechanical or machining-related curriculum, or 6 years of machining and programming experience.

Responsibilities

  • Create toolpaths and complete NC programs for 3-, 4-, and 5-axis milling, lathe, and mill-turn machines using CAD/CAM software, including CATIA V5/V6.
  • Analyze 3D CAD models and blueprints to determine efficient machining sequences and work-holding strategies.
  • Design custom fixtures and jigs in CAD to secure aerospace components during machining.
  • Simulate and verify machine programs before production to ensure toolpaths are error-free.
  • Research and refine tools, methods, and programs to reduce cycle times, improve tool life and part quality, and support cost-effective manufacturing.
  • Create setup sheets and tool lists for machinists.
  • Troubleshoot programming issues during setup, perform production-floor prove-outs, and mentor machine operators.

Benefits

  • Health insurance coverage
  • Life insurance
  • Disability insurance
  • Savings plan
  • Company-paid holidays
  • Paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business
