About The Position

This prototype machinist programs, sets up, and operates 3–5 axis CNC mills to produce machined parts, working independently and to a high standard. The role works directly with welders on special projects, including large vacuum weldments and chambers, and handles machining from start to finish, including deburring and detail work. The machinist is expected to maintain quality and safety standards. Experience with SolidCAM and Okuma mills is desirable but not required.

Nice To Haves

Experience with SolidCAM.
Experience with Okuma mills.
Strong knowledge of CAM software.
Solid understanding of G-Code and M-Code.
Experience with machine setup and inventive work-holding solutions.
Excellent shop math skills, including geometry and trigonometry.
Superior knowledge of GD&T and ability to interpret feature control blocks (ASME Y14).
High-vacuum (UHV) experience, including knowledge of high-vacuum surface-finish requirements.

Responsibilities

Program, set up, and machine assigned short-run prototype parts.
Complete setups on vertical mill centers and adjust equipment as needed to maintain quality standards.
Produce NC programs using CAM software, including SolidCAM.
Select cutting tools, machine speeds, and feed rates based on machine capabilities and work holding.
Verify that finished workpieces meet specifications and required tolerances, sometimes as close as ±0.0005.
Perform daily and weekly preventive maintenance.
Maintain good housekeeping using 5S practices.
Communicate defects and scrap.
Notify the supervisor of manufacturing problems or safety issues.
Perform other duties as assigned.
