About The Position

The CNC Operations Specialist (CNCOS) is a highly skilled and experienced production team member responsible for operating and setting up multiple CNC machine types, performing complex troubleshooting, and serving as a technical resource for the shop floor. This position plays a critical role in maintaining quality standards, supporting continuous improvement, and mentoring less experienced operators. The CNCOS reinforces process discipline, acts as a key floor-level point of contact for technical support, and collaborates closely with engineering, quality, and leadership teams.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Minimum of 4–6 years of experience in CNC machining, including independent setup and operation of mills, lathes, routers, or similar equipment.
  • Strong communication skills are essential.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, job travelers, and standard operating procedures.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and respectfully with coworkers, engineers, and management.
  • Comfortable documenting observations or providing feedback in written form.
  • Applied mathematical proficiency, including measurement conversions, basic trigonometry, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Ability to interpret part specifications and apply precise measurements is critical.
  • Strong troubleshooting and critical thinking skills are essential.
  • Must be able to identify process or equipment issues, determine corrective actions, and escalate when necessary.
  • A detail-oriented mindset and the ability to balance productivity with quality and safety are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience mentoring others or supporting training efforts is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Independently set up and operate multiple types of CNC equipment, including mills, lathes, and/or routers.
  • Perform complex setups involving tooling, offsets, workholding, and program validation with minimal supervision.
  • Interpret and apply part prints, work travelers, setup sheets, and G-code programs to produce in-tolerance parts.
  • Adjust machine settings and make program modifications as needed to ensure part conformity and production continuity.
  • Take precise measurements and calculate dimensions, offsets, and tolerances using appropriate tools and specifications.
  • Ensure consistent adherence to documented setup procedures and production standards.
  • Use metrology tools such as calipers, micrometers, and height gauges to perform in-process quality checks.
  • Accurately complete production documentation and inspection records.
  • Communicate observations or suggestions to engineering and quality teams to support process improvements or part revisions.
  • Coach and support Production Support Specialists and other operators in machine operation, blueprint interpretation, and safety procedures.
  • Clearly explain technical processes and provide guidance in a professional and constructive manner.
  • Assist with onboarding and cross-training efforts by demonstrating proper setup and operation techniques.
  • Reinforce safety protocols and quality expectations through daily interactions.
  • Identify recurring issues or inefficiencies and collaborate with engineering, maintenance, or leadership to address root causes.
  • Participate in 5S and lean manufacturing initiatives to improve workspace organization and productivity.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment by modeling best practices and addressing unsafe behaviors.
