CNC Machinist 3rd Shift

Gleason•Rochester, NY
•$22 - $27

About The Position

Gleason Corporation is seeking machinists for third-shift openings, with opportunities for candidates ranging from entry-level to master-level experience. The role sets up and operates conventional and/or CNC machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments, applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. Machinists inspect finished parts to verify they meet print specifications. Machine tools may include lathes, horizontal and vertical mills, CNC multi-axis machining centers, internal and external precision grinders, and CURVIC coupling grinders. The position is structured across four machinist levels. Level I performs basic setups and machine operations under supervision, follows detailed instructions, monitors machining conditions, and uses measuring instruments to maintain dimensions and tolerances. Level II handles a wider range of more complex machines and operations, plans work from drawings, makes CNC edits, selects cutting tools and machining parameters, and trains Level I machinists. Level III performs a full range of operations, sets up and debugs CNC programs, manufactures complete items, performs precision handwork, uses advanced measuring equipment, and trains and assists other machinists. Level IV operates multiple machines at an advanced level, develops and critiques machining approaches and programs, handles unusual or untried processes, applies advanced metrology and shop mathematics, and serves as a subject-matter expert, mentor, and coach. All machinists are expected to meet production targets, follow company and department procedures, cooperate with team members, multitask, learn and participate in cell operations and equipment development, and contribute to continuous improvement, 5-S, and efforts to reduce scrap and rework. Overtime and different shifts may be needed to meet productivity requirements and customer expectations. The listed pay range is $18–$30 per hour; actual compensation depends on qualifications, experience, education, schedule, shift premiums, overtime, and other factors.

  • Willingness to work overtime and different shifts as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree in Advanced Manufacturing/Machining desired.
  • Microsoft Word and Excel knowledge is a plus.
  • Experience in precision machining, including conventional or CNC machine tools, with opportunities available across experience levels.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate conventional and/or CNC machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, program readouts, technical directives, work sheets, drawings, and specifications to plan machining work.
  • Select and obtain materials, cutting tools, machine attachments, fixtures, machine feeds, and speeds appropriate to the work.
  • Align and fixture parts, perform machining operations, and monitor tooling, coolant flow, machine operation, and part dimensions.
