CNC Machinist-Mill Turn

Apple•Sunnyvale, CA

About The Position

The Product Realization Lab (PRL) is seeking a seasoned CNC prototype machinist to turn digital designs into real-world objects. PRL creates high-quality models, prototypes, and manufacturing and design solutions, emphasizing innovative solutions, service, quality, customer satisfaction, and sustainability. The role involves preparing materials, programming toolpaths, setting up and operating multi-axis mill-turn CNC machines, and checking finished components. The machinist will lead process development for technically demanding parts, mentor other machinists, and work independently with significant judgment and initiative. The position also requires collaboration with teammates and engineering partners, regular communication about project status and timelines, and adherence to quality and safety standards.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of experience setting up, operating, and programming CNC machines.
  • Experience programming in a 3D CAD/CAM environment.
  • Experience holding close tolerances and validating dimensions using hand metrology, including calipers, micrometers, and surface plate inspection.
  • Ability to program complex 3D parts, including general geometries and free-form shapes.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor or informally lead other machinists.
  • Excellent problem-solving, troubleshooting, and interpersonal skills.
  • High school diploma or equivalent applicable experience.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply detailed part drawing requirements.
  • Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Esprit CAD/CAM software.
  • Multi-axis mill-turn operation and programming experience.
  • Knowledge of machine code (G-code/M-code).
  • Experience working with a wide range of materials.
  • Experience using horizontal and vertical saws, manual mills, and lathes.
  • Track record of driving process or quality improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare materials for machining using manual and CNC machines.
  • Program complex 3D parts in a CAD/CAM environment, including general geometries and free-form shapes.
  • Assemble fixtures, tool holders, and cutting tools for machining operations.
  • Hold close tolerances and validate critical features using hand metrology equipment.
  • Work independently on assignments, exercising judgment and initiative in selecting methods and processes with minimal oversight.
  • Lead and mentor other machinists in advanced CAD/CAM programming and complex part strategies.
  • Own process development for technically demanding parts, including fixture design, toolpath strategy, multi-axis mill-turn setup, and close-tolerance validation.
  • Collaborate with teammates and engineering to ensure product quality, including providing design-for-manufacturability input on part drawings.
  • Communicate project status regularly.
  • Adapt quickly to new processes with minimal information or support.
  • Drive continuous improvement in machining processes, cycle times, and quality.
  • Follow operational and routine maintenance instructions accurately.
  • Maintain a safe and clean workspace.
