About The Position

John Crane, a business of Smiths Group, is a global leader in mission-critical flow control solutions for energy and process industries. This role involves performing and recording manufacturing activities to meet company objectives, handling multiple concurrent tasks with fluctuating priorities. The CNC Machinist will set up and operate CNC Milling or Turning machines to manufacture precision components, and will also be capable of operating manual lathes and mills. Familiarity with operations like drilling, tapping, threading, turning, reaming, boring, facing, and other machining operations performed on C.N.C. equipment is expected. The ability to modify or edit existing programs is also required.

Requirements

  • High school education plus 2 years technical training.
  • Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with CNC milling or turning operations.
  • Over 5 years of experience in related or subordinate work, plus 6 months on the job training.
  • Proficient in reading blueprints and understanding tolerances and dimensions.
  • Familiarity with G-code programming and CNC machine controls.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Experience in precision component manufacturing.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time; a minimum of 2 hours.
  • Must be able to maneuver to all areas of the office, shop, warehouse, or manufacturing plant.
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds.
  • Must be able to bend, reach, kneel, twist, and grip items while working at assigned desk area.
  • Must have manual dexterity and coordination to operate office equipment.
  • Must be able to simultaneously manage several objectives, changing priorities and reassign priorities to complete assignments.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Must be able to respond to visual and aural cues.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Mazak (Mill-Turn), Okuma, and Haas machines.
  • CNC programming experience (at the machine or offline).
  • Red Seal or equal experience.
  • Proficient in operating manual lathes and mills.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, and run CNC Mills and/or CNC Turning Centers.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and work instructions.
  • Understand and apply GD&T, tolerances, product features, and dimensional requirements.
  • Perform machine setups including tooling, offsets, and fixture alignment.
  • Notify supervisor of shop and tooling requirements.
  • Operate CNC machines as assigned and may be required to operate more than one machine simultaneously.
  • Follow preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Assist in machine repair when needed.
  • Keep machine and work area safe, clean, lubricated and orderly.
  • Keep accurate time reporting on all activities.
  • Remain aware and follow all health and safety practices. Work in a safe fashion and report any concerns to supervisor.
  • Train and assist other CNC set up Operators.
  • Utilize knowledge of working properties for a wide variety of materials such as aluminum, brass, cast iron, alloy steels, plastics, etc.
  • Pre-set tools and address tool off-sets prior to finishing cuts.
  • Use measuring instruments such as micrometres, vernier, calliper, CMM, etc. to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Work to required tolerances and be responsible for quality of work produced.
  • Make edits to programs.
  • Report all opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Utilize knowledge of shop mathematics, charts and tables.
  • Perform other duties as assigned utilizing normal skill and ability of the current position.
  • Take part in training for new skills.
