CNC Machinist - Advanced Rotary Engines

LiquidPistonBloomfield, CT
Onsite

About The Position

LiquidPiston is pioneering next-generation rotary engine technologies that are transforming power generation and propulsion. Our engineers and technicians build high-performance prototypes that deliver breakthrough efficiency, power density, and compact design. We are looking for a talented CNC Programmer and Prototype Machinist to join our fast-moving R&D team and help bring innovative concepts from design to physical testing. As a CNC Programmer & Prototype Machinist, you will play a critical hands-on role in machining precision parts for engine prototypes, test rigs, and development hardware. This position demands advanced CNC programming skills, strong machining expertise, and the ability to thrive in a dynamic, high-tempo prototype environment. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated problem-solver who enjoys working directly with engineers to turn ideas into working hardware using both CNC and manual equipment.

Requirements

  • Solid experience programming and operating CNC mills and lathes, with strong preference for multi-axis milling work.
  • Working knowledge of Haas and Fanuc controllers.
  • Proficiency with MasterCam for programming and toolpath generation (highly preferred; other CAM experience considered).
  • Hands-on capability with manual machine tools (Bridgeport mill, engine lathe, surface grinder).
  • Ability to interpret detailed mechanical drawings, including GD&T callouts.
  • Proven problem-solving skills and comfort working independently on prototype and one-off projects.
  • High level of attention to detail and personal accountability for quality.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset in a fast-paced R&D setting.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, optimize, and maintain CNC programs for complex multi-axis milling and turning operations.
  • Set up and operate CNC mills and lathes (primarily Haas and Fanuc controls) to produce tight-tolerance prototype components.
  • Generate efficient toolpaths and programs in MasterCam (preferred) from engineering drawings, 3D models, and verbal instructions.
  • Machine high-precision parts while verifying conformance to specifications using precision measurement tools.
  • Run manual machines as needed, including Bridgeport mills, manual lathes, and surface grinders.
  • Partner with design and engineering teams to provide DFM feedback and refine prototype designs for manufacturability.
  • Support process development, including tooling selection, fixture design, and continuous improvement of machining methods.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace while following all company safety protocols.

Benefits

  • PTO: We value work–life balance and encourage time to rest and recharge. Our benefits include 3 weeks of PTO (which covers vacation and sick time) plus 10 paid holidays.
  • Health & Wellness: Comprehensive medical and voluntary dental, and vision coverage - you choose what works best for you.
  • Equity Participation: Employes may receive RSUs (Restricted Stock Units).
  • 401(k) Match: We offer a 401k w/100% matching up to 3% of your salary and then 50% of contributions between 3-5% after 1 year of employment.
  • Career Growth: Ongoing training, mentorship, and learning opportunities to accelerate your growth.
