About The Position

Sets up and operates conventional, special purpose, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts. This role requires interpreting blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, routing, and inspection and setup instructions. The machinist will select, align, and secure holding fixtures and accessories, as well as cutting tools. They will load and secure raw material, calculate and set machining factors for manual operations, and download current revision machine control programs for CNC operations. The role involves monitoring machine operation for malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, adjusting controls as needed, unloading finished parts, deburring, and verifying conformance to specifications using manual methods or a CMM/DCC-CMM. Data entry into quality documentation and daily housekeeping/maintenance of assigned equipment are also key responsibilities. Collaboration with engineers, programmers, inspectors, and maintenance personnel to resolve issues is expected.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Completed a machining related apprenticeship program or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to present numerical data effectively and write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner.
  • Gathers and analyzes information skillfully.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision and Depth perception.

Responsibilities

  • Interprets blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, routing, inspection and setup.
  • Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures and accessories.
  • Selects, aligns, and secures cutting tools into tool holders and then installs tool assemblies.
  • Loads and secures raw material.
  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut for manual operations.
  • Retrieves current revision machine control program and downloads to CNC machine for CNC operations.
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls as needed.
  • Unloads finished machined part from machine and deburrs as necessary to perform quality checks.
  • Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications manually or through the use of a CMM / DCC-CMM.
  • Enters required data into quality documentation and signs as required.
  • Performs daily housekeeping and maintenance on assigned machine, auxiliary equipment, tooling and work area.
  • Confers with engineers, programmers, inspectors, or maintenance personnel to resolve machining or assembly issues.
