About The Position

Schafer Industries is seeking a 2nd shift CNC Aerospace Lathe Machinist for its Schafer Gear Works operation in Roscoe, IL. This role involves setting up and troubleshooting multi-axis CNC turn/mill centers to meet exact dimensional and finish requirements. The machinist will also review and edit CNC programs, participate in new product launches, and ensure the operational effectiveness of assigned equipment through preventative maintenance and problem-solving. The company is a premier supplier of off-highway axles and precision gearing solutions, serving diverse markets including aerospace and defense.

Requirements

  • Requires physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position, including the ability to walk, stand, lift, carry up to 50 pounds, push, kneel, bend, stoop, reach over and under waist level, twist for extended periods of time on cement or other hard surfaces, etc.
  • Demonstrates the verbal and written communication skills necessary to complete forms and take messages in a legible, accurate manner.
  • CNC Machinist – 2 years (preferred)
  • Must be able to communicate in English.
  • Ability to use a computer with the following applications: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Outlook

Responsibilities

  • Set-up and troubleshoot multi-axis (dual spindle / dual turret) CNC turn / mill centers to exact dimensional and finish requirements for the products.
  • Review and edit CNC programs as necessary for quick and successful completion of setup of these CNC machines.
  • Participate in the Engineering Department efforts on launch of new products and major process changes.
  • Operate assigned machinery to fabricate parts to the required specifications by reading work orders and specification sheets, powering up and down the machine, loading and unloading parts, ensuring proper tooling, creating and sizing jaws, changing chucking devices, recognizing insert and tool geometry, and making offset adjustments for size.
  • Ensures all parts are to the required specifications by reading blueprints, operation drawings, manuals, and specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances, sequence of operations, and setup requirements; verifying conformance of finished work piece specifications; complying with all work instructions; and following and maintaining ISO and Schafer procedures.
  • Ensure the operational effectiveness of all assigned equipment by conducting preventative maintenance procedures, observing machine operations to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusting controls as required, and conferring with engineers, production personnel, and programmers to resolve machining problems.
  • Maintaining and continuously improving productivity of assigned machines.
  • Measuring, marking, and scribing dimensions and reference points as guides.
  • Continuously looking at tool life and new tooling to cut costs on tools.
  • Reducing downtime of machines setups.
  • Getting computer setup ready by preparing tooling, fixtures, steel, gages, etc.
  • Maintaining the 6S program in assigned area.
  • Channeling problems and/or complaints to appropriate person for resolution.
  • Supporting all Schafer policies and procedures.
  • Reporting to Supervisor when assignments cannot be completed.
  • Providing input and assistance with the implementation of quality improvements.
  • Resolving problems.
  • Performing other job-related duties as required.
  • Helping evaluate job applicant’s knowledge for the cell prior to Schafer hiring.
  • Passing along vital information in the logbook for subsequent shifts.
  • Training new personnel in the operation of assigned machines.
  • Assisting and/or training in other lathe areas as needed.
