About The Position

The primary purpose of this position is to operate the CNC band saws to cut materials into extenders, brickmold or any other finished product. The operator must maintain acceptable safety, production, and quality levels.

Requirements

  • Must be able to read tape measures and calipers
  • Basic understanding of how-to operator a computer
  • Able to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Self-motivated and able to work with limited supervision

Nice To Haves

  • High School Diploma preferred
  • Prior lockout/tagout experience, a plus

Responsibilities

  • Learn to pull up specs on the CNC band saw to run product.
  • Gain a basic understanding of the CNC band saw to be able to perform troubleshooting.
  • Able to un-band incoming material, band outgoing material, and print labels for bundles.
  • Able to load pallets and stacking sticks into the appropriate areas in the CNC band saw outfeed.
  • Be able to observe and grade blanks coming out of the CNC band saw.
  • Be able to input parameters into the CNC band saw HMI to create new specs.
  • Check that your material is free of defects like nails or loose knots (if cutting wood) and evaluate the material type to set the appropriate cutting speed and blade tooth size.
  • Set the blade guide to the proper height and adjust the blade tension (often using a hydraulic tensioner on heavy-duty units like the Kentwood) to ensure the blade operates smoothly without slipping or fluttering.
  • Firmly secure the stock in the machine’s vice or clamps to prevent shifting during the cut.
  • Feed the material at a steady rate using the hydraulic feed knob, avoiding rushing the cut or forcing the blade.
  • Able to power down the machine and wait until the blade comes to a complete standstill before removing cut pieces or clearing debris with a brush.
  • Complete quality checks throughout the shift.
  • Be able to determine when the blades need to be changed.
  • Complete lockout/tagout in applicable areas.
  • Perform routine maintenance. (i.e. oilers are full, rollers are clean, no obstructions in the band saw.
  • Be able to assist maintenance with blade changes.
  • Be able to work alongside engineers on research and development efforts to machine new materials and to determine new blade types for new material machining.
  • Train others on the CNC band saw.
  • Must follow all safety rules and regulations. Also, spot potential safety hazards and report immediately to lead and/or supervisor.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (i.e. safety glasses, gloves, bump cap, steel toe shoes, ear plugs).
  • Be involved with Safety Walks with Lead or Supervisor.
  • Must maintain good housekeeping and follow all 5-S processes.
  • Support other areas in the plant as needed based on business need.
