About The Position

This position involves providing direct patient care under the supervision of a nurse. Responsibilities include ensuring a safe environment, assisting with patient needs, monitoring vital signs, and maintaining patient dignity. The role also includes unit-specific tasks such as managing supplies, maintaining cleanliness, and accurate documentation.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Completion of Nurse Assistant course
  • 1 – 2 years experience as nursing assistant, other healthcare-related experience, or nursing student with first clinical course completed.
  • Experience using physical assessment devices, personal grooming aids, and various equipment
  • Knowledgeable in use of various drainage tubes and receptacles
  • Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in written reports
  • Able to meet the physical demands of the job
  • CNA certification
  • CPR certification

Responsibilities

  • Assures safe environment for self and patient
  • Demonstrates awareness of infection control guidelines and adheres to hospital policies
  • Distributes ice water every prn to patients whose orders permit
  • Prepares patient for meals, follows individual physician orders for NPO holds, fluid restrictions, and assists patient eating as indicated
  • Demonstrates ability to correctly obtain vital signs, blood pressure, pulse, respiratory, temperature
  • Reports abnormal vital signs to nurse caring for patient
  • Provides transportation for patient upon admission and discharge
  • Assists patients up in chair, chair to bed, bed or chair to bathroom
  • Ambulates patients safely and as often as physician’s orders recommend
  • Maintains patient’s privacy and dignity with all procedures
  • Answers call light promptly and attends to patient needs
  • Administers peri-care to catheterized patients once per shift and prn
  • Obtains height and weight on all admissions and inpatients as requested
  • Cares for patients in isolation using proper technique
  • Properly obtains urine and stool specimens as requested
  • Does post-mortem care per Hospital Policy
  • Demonstrates the ability to assist patient in performing daily grooming activities i.e., bathing, washing hair, providing dentures, foot care, pin care, linen changes
  • Performs glucometer checks
  • Assesses pulse oximetry
  • Demonstrates the ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Demonstrates ability to apply telemetry, run strip and turn monitor on
  • Assists in inventory as assigned
  • Puts up supplies as assigned
  • Reports-off to incoming shifts with complete and accurate detail of shift events
  • Keeps unit and patient rooms tidy every shift
  • Cleans and replaces equipment necessary in patient care
  • Keeps linen bags emptied every shift and prn
  • Is aware of charges and follows through with placing charge stickers in proper place
  • Participates in PI/QI activities as requested
  • Retrieves items needed on an urgent or STAT basis
  • Turns in requests for schedule per unit policy
  • Adheres to all hospital policies and procedures
  • Supports department by demonstrating flexibility with the schedule and job duties
  • Obtains accurate I&O and charts on graphics in timely manner
  • Documents vital signs accurately on graphics in timely manner
  • Knows and uses accepted medical terms and abbreviation
  • Other duties as assigned
