About The Position

The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in assisted living. The NA provides resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned resident under the supervision of a charge nurse.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or general equivalency diploma (GED) preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in assisted living preferred.
  • Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing.
  • Satisfactorily completes yearly department specific competency testing and maintains a record of continuing education credits for each year.
  • A minimum of 12 hours continuing education are required annually.
  • Maintains all department specific required certifications.
  • When applicable, for applicable states, certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
  • Dependent on facility and required responsibilities, this role may classify as a Sanford Category II Driver requiring a motor vehicle report and proof of valid driver’s license.
  • Also must be medically qualified to perform the essential driving functions of this position as per our Sanford Driving Policy per the leaders request.

Responsibilities

  • Provides assistance with basic health care needs including daily living activities that may include, but are not limited to, bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, obtaining and recording vital signs, and providing psychosocial support and other personal care to assigned resident.
  • Depending upon location, they may assist the resident in transferring, repositioning, and walking using correct and appropriate transfer techniques and equipment and also provides range of motion and passive exercises.
  • Completes tasks related to food preparation and dining, while creating a positive dining experience for the resident.
  • Assists residents with meals and snacks, provides water and supplements as appropriate.
  • Depending upon location the NA may aid providers and nursing staff members with procedures and/or collect non-invasive body fluid specimens and gather vital signs.
  • Depending upon location the NA may administer prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse and within their scope of practice as defined by state regulations.
  • NA documents the outcomes related to resident care, medication administration, behavior, activity, and dietary.
  • NA must communicate changing condition, medication follow-up and care related concerns/responses to the charge nurse.
  • Depending upon location, NA may provide housekeeping and laundry services to assist residents with keeping living areas clean and operational.
  • Provides assistance and documentation with wellness and recreational programs and encourages residents to participate.
  • The NA has knowledge of and delivers age-appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident as per care/service plan.
  • Depending upon the location, may need to be knowledgeable of providing care to tenants with dementia.
  • The NA is considered a member of the nursing team and is expected to know, and will be held accountable for, following infection prevention and control policies and Personal Protective Equipment use.
  • The nursing department provides care 24 hours/day; any of those hours may be an expectation of employment specific to the needs of the department, possibly with varying shifts.
  • These needs change dependent upon staffing availability and resident census.
  • Will be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Specific shift assignments will be made based on nursing area and by location.
  • Committee meeting attendance may be expected at times.
  • When students are providing resident care, treatment, and/or services as part of their training, any/all employees may be asked to provide direction to the students.
