MedSurg 2 is a med surg unit that supports Trauma / Ortho patients in addition to a variety of other patients. The CNA/Nursing Assistant assists the RN with the daily care of patients, including bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, activity orders, and ambulation. They are responsible for measuring and documenting vital signs, intake and output, and daily weights, as well as accurately documenting in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). The role involves performing purposeful rounding, collecting specimens, and completing various errands. The CNA also maintains stock for the nursing area, cleans equipment and work areas, and performs patient positioning and transporting duties. They assist with nutritional needs and skin integrity maintenance. Depending on site/unit requirements and under the direction of the RN, tasks may include removing IVs, providing post mortem care, and performing bladder scans. Practice must adhere to infection prevention policies, including hand hygiene and knowledge of sterile and aseptic procedures. The role requires the ability to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, demonstrating knowledge of growth and development principles.
