About The Position

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) - Med Surg Days position at Ohio County Hospital in Hartford, KY is a full-time role. The CNA will perform designated tasks for patients of all age groups in an acute care setting, including swing bed patients, as assigned by the Charge Nurse. Responsibilities include patient care activities such as feeding, bathing, oral care, positioning, ambulating, and transporting. The role also involves basic patient monitoring (temperature, pulse, respiration, B/P, I & O), maintaining a clean and safe patient environment, and communicating patient needs and changes in condition to the nurse. All tasks are performed in accordance with hospital and nursing policies, procedures, and legal compliance. Good communication skills, teamwork, and customer relations are essential. The CNA will also be responsible for preparing patients for meals, feeding, providing water, turning bed patients, ensuring patient privacy, and providing supplies and oral care. Safety precautions such as lowering bed position, locking rollers, raising bed rails, and positioning call lights are critical. The CNA must report faulty equipment, infection or safety hazards, and use equipment and supplies efficiently. Event reports are to be completed as required. The employee must know and respond appropriately to all emergency codes and report to their assigned area during disaster drills or disasters. Proper body mechanics and awareness of waste segregation are also required. The CNA is accountable for ensuring patient safety during all duties.

Requirements

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent required for all positions (may be allowed to sign a GED agreement to obtain within 6 months).
  • Active CNA license in the state of Kentucky, or one year experience as nurse’s aide.
  • BLS provider or obtains within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Performs designated tasks for patients in all age groups in acute care setting as well as swing bed patients as assigned by Charge Nurse; may include feeding, bathing, oral care, positioning, ambulating, and transporting.

  • Obtains linens, makes beds, and keeps patient environment neat, clean and safe.
  • Attends to the patient’s comfort and keeps nurse in charge of patient care informed of patient’s needs and or changes in condition.
  • Tasks are performed in accordance to hospital and nursing policies and procedures as well as legal compliance policies.
  • Nursing Assistants must have good communication skills and support teamwork in the delivery of patient care as well as demonstrate customer relations consistent with the hospital’s purpose, vision, and values.
  • Demonstrates age-appropriate skills in completing assigned patient activities
  • Transports patients for admission, transfer and dismissal in a safe and timely fashion.
  • Lifts, turns, and positions the patient in bed and chair, assuring correct body alignment and assists with transfer or ambulation as requested.
  • Places I & O record at the bedside as assigned and accurately records intake and output.
  • Empties foley catheter bags and records urinary output at end of shift. Empties other drains as assigned and records amount correctly.
  • Collects specimens as assigned using correct procedure. Labels in front of patients.
  • Transports specimens to the lab as assigned according to established policy.
  • Observes and records vital signs accurately and in a timely manner as assigned.
  • Obtains weight and height on patients as assigned and/or according to policy.
  • Makes beds neatly and straighten the patient’s area as indicated. Keeps environment safe.
  • Accurately and promptly reports changes in patients’ condition to the appropriate nurse.
  • Appropriately bathes patients and provides skin care as indicated by patient’s condition or as assigned by nurse. Attends to other personal care needs, such as shaving, hair washing if patient’s condition and patient’s provider allows.
  • Demonstrates competency in performing assigned procedures. (Enemas, hot-cold compresses, soaks, intermittent compression stockings, etc.)
  • Prepares patients for meals and delivers and sets up meal trays. Feeds patients as indicated according to policy and procedure and records % eaten in medical record.
  • Provides fresh water to assigned patients.
  • Turns assigned bed patients every two hours at a minimum when unable to turn self.
  • Provides for patient privacy during any treatment and throughout hospitalization.
  • Provides supplies and/or performs oral care to patients.
  • Takes necessary safety precaution of lowering bed position, locking bed rollers, raising bed rails, position call lights, keeping personal items near patient reach as indicated.
  • Reports any faulty equipment and infection or safety hazards to the Charge Nurse on the unit.
  • Uses equipment and supplies in safe, efficient manner. Charge capture methods utilized according to established processes.
  • Event reports completed as required by policy; may request assistance of Charge Nurse. Timeliness of completion is to be as soon as possible after the occurrence, but no later than by the end of the shift being worked.
  • Knows and responds appropriately to all emergency codes. Reports to assigned area during disaster drill or disaster and carries out assigned functions in timely manner.
  • Knows and utilizes proper body mechanics.
  • Reports any Environment of Care hazards/risks to the Charge Nurse.
  • Aware of segregation of waste.
  • Assists other personnel in reducing clutter in the work environment – carts, equipment in the hallway to be on wall opposite the nursing station.
  • Applies safety guidelines as appropriate for specific patient (age appropriate – pediatric, geriatric, orthopedic, surgical, etc.). Assures patient identification bands are on, Kanga bands on pediatric patients.
  • Makes appropriate requests to Charge Nurse for supplies or equipment needs.
  • Accountable for ensuring patient safety during the course of performing duties.
