About The Position

The Certified Medical Assistant / Registered Medical Assistant performs routine administrative and patient care support duties in a medical practice to assist medical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients and ensures that the office runs smoothly.

Responsibilities

  • Room patients and collect pertinent information, including chief complaint, family history, social history, surgical history, and medication reconciliation.
  • Complete telephone communications with patients, families, pharmacies, and healthcare facilities according to department policies and provider direction.
  • Gather, update, and maintain patient information via telephone in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Perform administrative duties including patient check-in and check-out, scheduling appointments, prior authorizations, benefit verification, referral coordination, and diagnostic testing coordination.
  • Assist with office procedures in accordance with department-specific competencies.
  • Perform suture and staple removal and other point-of-care diagnostic testing as directed.
  • Provide patients with written instructions regarding procedures, medications, and follow-up care at the provider’s direction.
  • Retrieve and provide condition-specific patient education materials from approved online, internal, or printed resources as directed by providers.
  • Administer medications according to provider orders.
  • Assist with prescription refill requests following department protocols.
  • Call prescriptions into pharmacies, notify patients of refills, and document all actions within the EMR.
  • Maintain competencies related to point-of-care testing, equipment operation, and specialty-specific training.
  • Perform bio-impedance testing as applicable.
  • Assist with bone marrow biopsies, including preparation of slides for cytology.
  • Transport patients to the emergency department, hospital units, or other designated areas as needed.
  • Conduct pre-procedure calls to review appointment instructions and preparation requirements.
  • Deliver supplies to Central Processing Department (CPD) for cleaning and retrieve cleaned supplies for departmental use.
  • Stock exam rooms and procedure areas with necessary medical supplies and equipment.
