About The Position

Under general supervision, club sport coaches recruit student athletes; assist in the scheduling of games, conducts practices for the assigned team, and contributes to the educational mission of the University by offering direction and instruction in the area of club sports. The role involves instructing, teaching, and assisting in the development of players during practices, coaching the team during games/scrimmages, recruiting players for the following year, and making scholarship recommendations. Additionally, the coach will transport and supervise players when traveling and provide accurate data to the Director of Club Sports about the team and its members.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of recruiting techniques and the ability to effectively use them.
  • Ability to evaluate potential student athletes during the recruiting process.
  • Knowledge of league rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of coaching and teaching techniques and the ability to effectively use them.
  • Ability to read and comprehend various forms, documentation, files and information in the department.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to receive telephone calls, respond to inquiries and communicate with others by telephone.
  • Basic mathematical skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to be able to verify accuracy of record keeping and athletics information.
  • Ability to handle routine office operations (typing, filing, record keeping, etc.).
  • At least one year of experience in coaching at the high school, college or higher competitive level or at least some experience in participating in the respective sport.
  • Valid driver's license required. License must meet insurance company rules and regulations for driving underwriting criteria.
  • Must take and pass the "American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer."

Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the educational mission of the University by coordinating the instruction of student-athletes in the sport that they have been assigned to coach.
  • Recruits student athletes for the respective club sport program.
  • Instructs methods and strategies; coaches student in the sport.
  • Provides motivation, both athletic and academic, to student athletes.
  • If needed, will assistant student leaders in scheduling practices and meets.
  • Supervises assistant coach/coaches.
  • Will assist students in with team travel and at times will be required to supervise players while traveling.
  • Will work with team leaders in providing to provide the Director of the Kiernan Center with update rosters.
  • Coordinate with team leaders the manner in which team scores will be reported to the media for home and away games.
  • Operates the program under the rules and regulations of the university and league rules; understanding that a coach can be suspended without pay or terminated if found to be involved in rule violations.
