The CLS II performs waived, moderate, or highly complex laboratory tests authorized under CLIA and the applicable Nevada scope-of-practice requirements, with duties matched to the individual’s education, training, experience, and technical abilities. The role performs a wide variety of laboratory procedures using independent judgment and manual and automated methods across Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and other disciplines added to the laboratory. The position follows established procedures for collecting, processing, analyzing, and reporting patient test results; follows quality-control policies and documents corrective actions; identifies and addresses issues that could affect test performance; and reviews results for accuracy before release. It also performs and documents instrument and equipment maintenance, recognizes age-specific differences in expected results from newborns through geriatrics, and may perform venipuncture or capillary puncture across age groups. The CLS II helps develop and maintain laboratory policies and procedures, follows department and hospital policies relating to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources, and tests proficiency-testing samples in the same manner as patient samples without prohibited collaboration. In a supervisor’s absence, the employee may serve as Lead Tech or General Supervisor for the section or department during the shift. The role may also include responsibilities related to the laboratory information system (LIS) and point-of-care testing (POC), along with other duties assigned by the department manager or director.
