About The Position

This position is for a Clinical Lab professional at Prime Healthcare St. Mary's Hospital in Kankakee, IL. The role involves performing a wide range of laboratory tests, adhering to quality control policies, and ensuring accurate reporting of patient results. The individual must be capable of identifying and resolving issues that may affect test performance and recognize age-specific differences in expected results. Responsibilities also include instrument maintenance, performing venipunctures, assisting with policy development, and adhering to all safety and hospital procedures. Depending on the absence of a supervisor, the individual may be assigned Lead Tech responsibilities and may also be involved with LIS and/or POC systems.

Requirements

  • Minimum two years of hospital laboratory work experience required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological health science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or other educational requirements stated in CLIA (42 CFR 493.1423).
  • Current and Valid State License if the laboratory is located in a state where required.

Nice To Haves

  • ASCP certification, or equivalent preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform only waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA, as per CFR § 493.1425, § 493.1495 and § 493.1463.
  • Adhere to laboratory procedures for collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
  • Follow established quality control policies and procedures, documenting corrective actions when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance and either correct them or notify the immediate supervisor, Director, or Medical Director.
  • Perform a wide variety of laboratory procedures using manual and automated methods in Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and other disciplines.
  • Perform and document maintenance on instruments and equipment (daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed).
  • Review the accuracy of patient results prior to releasing or reporting.
  • Recognize age-specific differences in expected results for newborns to geriatrics.
  • Ensure proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples and prohibit collaboration with other laboratories before reporting results.
  • May be required to perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on various age groups.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to all department and hospital policies and procedures related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
  • May be assigned/identified as Lead Tech in the absence of a supervisor, with responsibility for the section or department during their shift.
  • May be assigned responsibilities related to LIS and/or POC.
  • Perform other tasks or responsibilities as assigned by the department manager/director.
