About The Position

The City of Alexandria's Department of Information Technology Services (ITS) is seeking an experienced Cloud Architect Engineer to shape the direction of the City's cloud, collaboration, and identity environment. This position sets technical standards, drives modernization, and builds the secure, automated foundation that City departments rely on every day. The Cloud Architect Engineer works closely with ITS teams, translating business needs into scalable cloud solutions and partnering with departments across the City to deliver them. The role requires sound technical judgment, the ability to balance security with usability, and strong collaboration skills with stakeholders at all levels.

Requirements

  • Four-Year College Degree
  • five or more years of experience in firewall technologies and advanced network and server support, Ethernet routing switches, web filtering, bandwidth management, Quality of Service (QOS) techniques, Wireless AP's and Security switch devices that include SSL-VPN & IPSEC VPN
  • considerable working knowledge of network troubleshooting techniques
  • at least three years of experience in the design and configuration of Voice over IP (VoIP) networking
  • at least three years of experience in the design, configuration and operation of DHCP & DNS networking services
  • at least three years of experience in Internet backbone connectivity
  • any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience architecting or administering enterprise cloud environments with automation and orchestration applied to identity management, collaboration platforms, and system lifecycle operations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of enterprise collaboration systems, identity governance workflows, and compliance-driven automation supporting information requests or legal discovery.
  • Familiarity with automation frameworks, scripting languages, cloud orchestration tools, or identity workflow engines used to streamline operations.
  • Experience implementing and managing SSO, Conditional Access, and identity protection policies.
  • Experience implementing standards such as SSO, MFA, OAuth/OIDC, Conditional Access, and automated identity protection workflows.
  • Familiarity with Zero Trust architecture and hybrid identity integration.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and administer enterprise collaboration, communication, and productivity platforms.
  • Design, implement, and optimize cloud-based collaboration and messaging services.
  • Oversee secure communication and data protection practices.
  • Develop and maintain secure configurations supporting messaging, communications, and information governance.
  • Lead identity and access lifecycle management across cloud platforms.
  • Implement orchestration patterns that reduce manual effort and improve accuracy.
  • Architect and administer enterprise authentication and access control solutions.
  • Administer SSO, MFA, OAuth/OIDC integrations, Conditional Access strategies, and RBAC models.
  • Support legal, regulatory, and compliance obligations.
  • Ensure cloud services, identity systems, and operational processes meet requirements for FOIA, CJIS, NIST, and HIPAA.
  • Evaluate and optimize licensing, service utilization, interoperability, and cost efficiency.
  • Use automated reporting and analytics to identify optimization opportunities.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
  • Execute additional responsibilities consistent with the role of a Cloud Architect and organizational needs.
