About The Position

BJ's Wholesale Club is seeking a Closing Manager to provide leadership and direction within the club, driving club performance, particularly in directly managed departments. This role involves leading the Assistant Closing Manager, Recovery team, and Utility team, ensuring effective performance through guidance, support, and oversight. The Closing Manager is accountable for maintaining policies and procedures, delivering a positive member service experience, upholding Grand Opening Look Daily (GOLD) standards, and providing overall club leadership. The position also assists in audit compliance, drives collaboration with Business Partners, and oversees onboarding, certification, and training for food safety and operational excellence. As a Manager on Duty (MOD) when needed, the Closing Manager takes full responsibility for club operations, team leadership, and member engagement during assigned shifts. A valid ServSafe Food Safety Certification is required and must be maintained. Specific certifications for retail propane oversight in Florida and yearly forklift certification are also necessary, with BJ's covering associated costs and training.

Requirements

  • 2 years of experience in retail, supermarket, or warehouse perishable operations required.
  • Experience in managing inventory turnover and waste reduction strategies.
  • Forklift Certification required.
  • High school diploma required.
  • Basic computer proficiency (MS Word, Excel, Email) required.
  • Open shift availability required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must maintain all training and required certifications.
  • Valid ServSafe Food Safety Certification required and must be maintained.
  • In Florida, must obtain a qualifier certification through the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for retail propane oversight.
  • Must complete yearly certification for a forklift license.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and direction within the club, driving club performance.
  • Lead the Assistant Closing Manager, Recovery team, and Utility team.
  • Maintain policies and procedures.
  • Deliver a positive service experience to members.
  • Ensure GOLD standards club conditions.
  • Assist in audit compliance efforts.
  • Drive collaboration with Business Partners.
  • Oversee onboarding, certification, and training for food safety and operational excellence.
  • Serve as Manager on Duty (MOD) as needed, taking full responsibility for club operations.
  • Oversee end-of-day execution for Recovery, Utility, Perishables, and overnight prep.
  • Actively walk the floor during closing hours to observe and engage with Members and team performance.
  • Guarantee Greet, Anticipate, Appreciate (GAA) and Fast, Friendly, Full, Fresh, Clean experience until the last Member exits.
  • Ensure full-functioning departments through close by validating registers, perishable stations, and service areas.
  • Resolve or escalate evening Member concerns to ensure satisfaction.
  • Monitor closing in-stocks, product rotation, culling, and merchandising, especially in perishables.
  • Conduct quality and date checks on products.
  • Enforce sanitation excellence by confirming cleaning checklists, sweep logs, waste pulls, and safety procedures.
  • Manage Assistant Closing Manager and Recovery team productivity, including scheduling and coaching.
  • Utilize tools like Hot List, NAFS, Electronic Reports, incorrect price sign reports, pallet tag utilization, productivity dashboards, and department-level reporting.
  • Ensure sanitation, cold chain, and safety checklists are completed daily and documentation is compliant.
  • Champion “close to open” operational standards, ensuring departments are clean, stocked, and ready for the next day.
  • Identify and escalate issues with equipment like compactors, refrigeration, and cleaning tools.
  • Coach onboarding and certifications, reinforcing ServSafe, PPE, and department-specific training.
  • Support departments in the bottom quartile by ensuring follow-through on action plans and reinforcing daily execution standards.
  • Partner cross-functionally with ACMs, Club Manager, and Department Leads to improve closing routines and member experience.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Utilize BJ’s MY WORK system for assigned tasks and compliance.
  • Operate forklift safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain regular, predictable, full attendance.
