About The Position

Our client is a well-established technology company building AI-powered solutions for large-scale retail and e-commerce platforms. Their products power personalization, product discovery, and automated merchandising experiences used by millions of shoppers every month across web, mobile, and in-store channels. Their platform is distinguished by advanced AI capabilities, proprietary data, workflows, quality controls, and domain expertise, enabling them to deliver production-grade, brand-safe AI systems that operate reliably at enterprise scale. They are building the future of AI-powered fashion & retail automation and are seeking a skilled Clojure engineer. The role involves building AI workflows for generating outfit images, styled bundles, and "Complete the Look" recommendations at scale, systems for pairing products into looks to boost AOV and drive conversion, intelligent review flows for human-AI collaboration on styled recommendations, and vector search architectures for semantic discovery and product similarity. These systems must deliver high-scale APIs serving over 175 enterprise retailers and 100 million+ shoppers monthly, ensuring speed, reliability, and integration with the existing platform. The engineer will work with Clojure and ClojureScript across the stack, with a backend focus, owning features end-to-end from schema design to API implementation and review UI. The team consists of 12+ Clojure engineers who value ownership, autonomy, and shipping production code quickly. They are looking for individuals who are curious, opinionated about good code, and excited to build AI systems that work at scale. The company fosters a highly collaborative environment where hard technical problems are solved together through real-time debate and live conversation, enabling faster and smarter decision-making on complex issues. A significant portion of the week will be dedicated to design discussions, technical problem-solving sessions, and team syncs. This collaborative rhythm is core to their identity, and individuals who think out loud, enjoy real-time debate, and gain energy from close collaboration will thrive.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or other related fields.
  • Strong Clojure and ClojureScript experience, including building production systems, deep understanding of functional programming, and familiarity with the ecosystem (shadow-cljs, re-frame, reagent etc.).
  • Solid SQL skills and database design experience, including modeling complex domains in PostgreSQL, writing efficient queries, designing schemas, and handling migrations.
  • Hands-on familiarity with LLMs, including working with LLM APIs and understanding prompt engineering, context windows, and the practical challenges of non-deterministic outputs.
  • Collaborative nature, enjoyment of solving problems out loud with others, comfort with live technical discussions, and ability to bring energy that lifts the team.
  • Strong backend engineering fundamentals, including building APIs, designing data flows, handling errors gracefully, and architecting scalable systems.
  • High velocity in shipping code, balancing speed with quality, knowing when to refactor versus iterate, and not letting perfect be the enemy of good.
  • Ownership mindset, taking responsibility for features from conception to production, and caring about the outcome.
  • Curiosity in AI, workflow orchestration, vector search, frontend UIs, data modeling, and understanding how all the pieces fit together.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience integrating LLMs into production systems.
  • Experience with Java and the JVM ecosystem.
  • Experience with Temporal or similar workflow orchestration systems (Airflow, Dagster, Step Functions).
  • Familiarity with vector databases like Qdrant, Pinecone, or Weaviate, and RAG architectures.
  • Experience with MCP (Model Context Protocol) or building tool-calling systems where LLMs interact with external services.
  • Understanding of image generation models, multimodal AI, or working with vision APIs.
  • Contributions to open-source Clojure projects.
  • Background in other functional programming languages (Haskell, OCaml, Elixir, Scala).
  • Experience building developer tools, automation systems, or human-in-the-loop workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Orchestrate multi-step AI operations using Temporal workflows, including product attribution, laydown image generation, outfit creation, and outfit copy generation.
  • Develop backend services in Clojure that integrate with LLM APIs (GPT, Gemini, etc.), manage context and prompts, handle streaming responses, and process structured outputs.
  • Design and implement data models and PostgreSQL schemas to support complex AI workflows, vector embeddings, and integration with the existing product catalog.
  • Build RAG pipelines using Qdrant for semantic search, similarity matching, and context retrieval to enhance AI recommendations.
  • Create ClojureScript UIs for review workflows, enabling human validation, editing, and improvement of AI-generated content.
  • Develop APIs and data pipelines to connect all system components.
  • Implement monitoring systems to track AI quality.
  • Contribute to the infrastructure that enables rapid shipping of features.

Benefits

  • Long-Term Contractor role
  • Competitive salary
  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI solutions
  • Collaborative and fast-paced work environment
  • Autonomy and ownership of features
  • Meaningful portion of the week in design discussions, technical problem-solving sessions, and team syncs
