About The Position

Emory Healthcare is seeking a dedicated Clinician Charge, Medical Surgical Department, to serve as a capable clinician with broad experience in patient care and a sound understanding of a specific patient population. This role involves routinely using acquired knowledge, theory, research, and experience to respond to changes in clinical situations. The RN professional will apply the Synergy Model for Care in practice, personalizing care for each patient/family, and serving as a resource and advocate for colleagues. This position plans, coordinates, and directs the daily operations of a specific shift on a clinical unit, supervises staff, and facilitates communication with physicians and administrators to provide optimal patient and family-centered care. The Clinician Charge is recognized as a change agent, leading efforts to strengthen organizational systems, adept at creative problem-solving, conflict negotiation, and collaboration. They demonstrate insight, judgment, and clinically sound risk-taking, role-modeling expert communication skills and foresight regarding the impact of nursing care on patient outcomes. This role is considered an expert clinician and leader within their specialty, responsible for various reports, operational form revisions, resource coordination, time management, policy adherence, and staying informed of clinical trends. They function as a charge nurse, role-modeling delegation and mentoring other Registered Nurses in the charge nurse role. This individual leads and coordinates team behavior, fosters leadership skills in others, and provides direction to less experienced staff regarding policies, scheduling, assignments, organizational skills, and daily operations. Performance reviews are completed with Nurse Manager input. The role incorporates the Synergy model for care in nurse/patient assignments, evaluates resource use and cost containment, coordinates unit staffing, initiates tests of change for managerial problems, and participates in regulatory agency reviews. They assist in administrative activities such as budget planning, cost containment, staffing schedules, and communicating concerns to the Unit Director. They evaluate policy impacts, support administrative decisions, facilitate daily operational issues, and ensure compliance with educational requirements. This role emphasizes understanding others' points of view, demonstrating effective communication, building an environment of open communication, serving as an arbitrator in conflicts, and taking appropriate action to correct unacceptable communication/behavior or counsel employees. They are aware of and support unit and colleague needs, empower and advocate for nurses, address customer concerns, and escalate patient issues when necessary. This role challenges and shapes systems for optimal outcomes, implements innovative approaches, and ensures staff have necessary resources. They identify, initiate, and collaborate on educational programs, develop management/leadership focused in-service training, and demonstrate current evidence-based practice. Must meet all Clinical Nurse I Employee Commitments and achieve points/contact hours as defined in the PLAN (clinical lattice) point system.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited prelicensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • 2 years of recent nursing experience
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in the area of concentration.
  • A valid, unencumbered Registered Nursing License approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing.
  • BLS certification.
  • ACLS may be required for certain departments, post hire
  • Additional certifications may be required based on department and specialty
  • If completing virtual care activities that may include multi-state practice, an active compact/multistate license (eNLC) is required within 60 days of hire.
  • Employees in role prior to 11/09/2025 will have until their next renewal date to achieve compact status.
  • Must meet all Clinical Nurse Employee Commitments.
  • Achieves electives/points and contact hours as defined in the PLAN (clinical lattice) point system to maintain position.
  • Must complete UCN/SNM criteria requirements within nine (9) months of promotion or hire, including completion of Enhancing your Communication HLC#6488, completion of formal preceptor training workshop and enrollment in LEAP course.

  • Takes appropriate action to counsel employees (i.e., verbal warnings for attendance & performance issues).

  • Takes appropriate action to address customer concerns and complaints (i.e., appropriate follow-up with Unit Director and risk management).
  • Addresses escalated patient issues and refers issues to Unit Director or Patient Advocate when unable to resolve.
