About The Position

Emory Healthcare is seeking a RN Clinician Charge for their Cardiovascular Stepdown department. This role involves being a capable charge nurse with extensive experience in patient care and a deep understanding of a specific patient population. The ideal candidate will utilize acquired knowledge, theory, research, and experience to manage clinical situations and serve as a resource to colleagues. This professional will apply the Synergy Model for Care, personalize patient care, and act as a strong advocate. The role includes planning, coordinating, and directing daily operations of a clinical unit shift, supervising staff, and facilitating communication with physicians and administrators to ensure optimal patient and family-centered care. The Clinician Charge is expected to be a change agent, leading efforts to strengthen organizational systems, demonstrating creative problem-solving, conflict negotiation, and collaboration. They will exhibit insight, judgment, and sound clinical risk-taking, role-modeling expert communication skills and foresight regarding the impact of nursing care on patient outcomes. This individual is recognized as an expert clinician and leader in their specialty, responsible for completing various reports, evaluating operational forms, and coordinating unit resources for optimal patient outcomes. They will also role-model time management, ensure policy compliance, and stay informed of clinical trends through benchmarking and evidence-based practice. The Clinician Charge will mentor other Registered Nurses in the role and functions of a Charge Nurse, lead team behavior, foster leadership skills in others, and provide direction on policies, scheduling, assignments, and daily operations. They will also complete performance reviews with Nurse Manager input and incorporate the Synergy Model for Care in nurse/patient assignments. Operational Management and Compliance responsibilities include evaluating resource use and cost containment, coordinating unit staffing, initiating tests of change for managerial problems, and participating in regulatory agency reviews. They will assist with administrative activities such as budget planning, cost containment, staffing schedules, and communicating concerns to the Unit Director. This role involves evaluating policy impacts, supporting administrative decisions, facilitating daily operational issues, and ensuring compliance with educational requirements. The Clinician Charge will demonstrate effective communication, take a leadership role in fostering open communication, serve as an arbitrator in conflicts, and take appropriate action to correct unacceptable behavior or performance issues. They will support colleagues' needs, empower nurses, address customer concerns, and escalate patient issues when necessary. This role involves challenging and shaping systems for optimal outcomes, implementing innovative approaches, and ensuring staff have the necessary resources. They will also identify, initiate, and collaborate on educational programs, develop management/leadership in-service training, and demonstrate current evidence-based practice.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited prelicensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • 2 years of recent nursing experience
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in the area of concentration.
  • A valid, unencumbered Registered Nursing License approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing.
  • BLS certification.
  • If completing virtual care activities that may include multi-state practice, an active compact/multistate license (eNLC) is required within 60 days of hire.
  • Must meet all Clinical Nurse Employee Commitments.
  • Achieves electives/points and contact hours as defined in the PLAN (clinical lattice) point system to maintain position.
  • Must complete UCN/SNM criteria requirements within nine (9) months of promotion or hire, including completion of Enhancing your Communication HLC#6488, completion of formal preceptor training workshop and enrollment in LEAP course.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates and directs the daily operations of a specific shift on a clinical unit.

  • Mentors other Registered Nurses to the role and functions of Charge Nurse.
  • Leads and coordinates team behavior between staff members and actively fosters the development of leadership skills in others.
  • Provides direction and guidance to less experienced staff concerning policies, scheduling, assignments, organizational skills and daily operations.

  • Takes a leadership role in building and maintaining an environment which fosters open and candid communication.
  • Serves as an arbitrator in resolution of conflicts between nursing staff.
  • Takes appropriate action to correct unacceptable communication/behavior as needed.
  • Takes appropriate action to counsel employees (i.e., verbal warnings for attendance & performance issues).
  • Aware of and supports units and colleagues needs through supportive and non-judgmental behaviors.
  • Actively empowers and advocates for nurses.
  • Takes appropriate action to address customer concerns and complaints (i.e., appropriate follow-up with Unit Director and risk management).
  • Addresses escalated patient issues and refers issues to Unit Director or Patient Advocate when unable to resolve.
  • Monitors issues and their resolution.
  • Challenges and shapes systems on the unit and hospital wide to achieve best possible outcomes.
  • Implements innovative approaches to meet the needs of patients and families.
  • Identifies, recognizes and responds to the needs of unit staff to ensure that staff has the resources and tools available to meet patient and family needs.
  • Identifies, initiates, and collaborates to provide needed educational programs.
  • Develops management/ leadership focused in-service (e.g., time management, team building, conflict resolution, budget, leadership activities).
  • Demonstrates current evidence-based practice and disseminates information.
  • Questions management practice as it relates to research.
