The Clinical Specialist (CS) is a licensed nurse who functions within the three spheres of influence: patient, nurse, and system. The CS must possess advanced knowledge of nursing practice and the ability to apply standards within the practice area. The Clinical Specialist functions independently to provide theory and evidence-based knowledge that shapes the practice and core competencies for the unit nursing and patient care staff. The Clinical Specialist provides area leadership in collaboration with the administrative leaders, focusing on orientation, professional development, skills/competency validation, evidence-based practice, shared governance, regulatory compliance, nurse sensitive quality indicators, and performance improvement. The Clinical Specialist collaborates with the multidisciplinary team and functions in the healthcare system as a leader, consultant, and change agent and, therefore, must possess strong communication and problem-solving skills. UAMS Labor & Delivery consists of 14 LDR rooms, four triage observational beds, two operating rooms suites, a three-bed recovery room area, and two state of the art Neonatal Stabilization rooms used to stabilize acutely ill neonates with specially trained staff from the Intensive Care Nursery. The unit provides high-risk obstetrical care for patients from across the state.
