About The Position

The Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) uses clinical social work techniques and theory to consult on, assess, and intervene with high-risk patients and their families on the impact and amelioration of emotional and social problems. Duties include, but are not limited to, psychosocial assessment, psychosocial diagnosis, treatment planning and implementation, evaluation, education, and the supervision, coaching, and mentoring of patients and family members. The position consults, collaborates, and communicates with a wide range of social, governmental, and legal agencies, courts, schools, clinics, other hospitals, physicians, and other sources involved in the patient's care.

Requirements

  • Master's degree from an accredited school of social work.
  • Active Massachusetts Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW)
  • Knowledge of the social work process and of community resources and agencies related to health, illness, and disability, generally gained through one to two years of on-the-job training.
  • Knowledge of community resources and agencies that serve children and families.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills to: work effectively with a range of healthcare professionals, build and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients and families, and supervise graduate students.
  • Ability to work on an interdisciplinary team.
  • Comfort in a fast-paced, dynamic environment (a sense of humor is valued).
  • Cultural sensitivity and comfort working with a wide range of racial and ethnic populations.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses patients and families to identify emotional and social problems, using the department's psychosocial assessment tool as a guideline.
  • Identifies the issues that must be addressed during the patient's care and formulates a plan.
  • Identifies when the patient's family should be involved in the initial assessment and attempts contact the same day, if indicated.
  • Provides psychotherapeutic treatment and/or psychosocial support to patients and families to reduce the impact of identified problems.
  • Uses social work technique and theory to help patients and families cope with illness or social problems and improve functioning and emotional state.
  • Keeps inpatients and families informed, involved, supported, and treated through at least weekly contacts. Increases contact whenever a change in care or plan requires it.
  • Reports all suspected cases of abuse and neglect.
  • Follows up to ensure the patient receives timely, comprehensive consultation and that legal mandates are met.
  • Consults and collaborates with healthcare team members to ensure patients' emotional and social needs are addressed.
  • Notifies supervisor when patients from an age group not regularly served are present. Seeks assistance from staff with knowledge of that age group's specialized needs.
  • Provides clinical supervision to Licensed Clinical Social Workers seeking independent licensure and to other department personnel, as assigned.
  • Assigns and oversees work and assists staff with complex cases.
  • Provides task supervision, leadership, and support to staff, as assigned.
  • Manages the internship program, including paperwork, contracts, training program, and evaluation.
  • Provides clinical supervision to interns.
  • Supports graduate and undergraduate training programs by supervising MSW and BSW students, as assigned.
  • Supports and/or coordinates new program developments or services related to BMC's mission.
  • Leads one or more department committees, such as bereavement, in-service training, ethics, or trauma.
  • Serves on additional department committees as appointed by the Director.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality according to hospital policy.
  • Uses professional discretion when deciding what patient information to include in the medical record or department clinical notes.
  • Notes in the medical record when critical patient information has been excluded and where it is available.
  • Documents each patient encounter concurrently in the medical record or department clinical record according to department policy. Documents ongoing treatment in department clinic records. Each entry includes date, time, title, and signature.
  • Complies with departmental, regulatory, and professional requirements for documentation, recording, and data collection.
  • Submits department statistics, records, and reports within required timeframes.
  • Assists management in running a quality department by participating in department programs and following department policies and procedures.
  • Identifies weaknesses in operations and recommends improvements.
  • Represents the department throughout the hospital and in the community on department practice and the field of social work.
  • Maintains competency in areas of responsibility to ensure quality care.
  • Attends scheduled staff meetings and in-service education programs punctually and consistently.
  • Obtains the continuing education units needed to maintain licensure.
  • Keeps work area and equipment neat and orderly. Helps clean and organize the department on own initiative and reports malfunctioning equipment to supervisor.
  • Maintains a complete understanding of emergency procedures.
  • Follows hospital infection control and safety procedures.
  • Follows hospital standards of conduct, including those on patient rights, to provide the best possible customer service and patient care.
  • Uses the hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for decision-making and to advance the hospital's mission.
  • Performs other duties as needed.
