About The Position

The Clinical Services Manager (CSM) is responsible for supervising and coordinating daily operations of the designated unit, including patient care and clinic/unit business processes. The Trauma Surgical Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (H4) has a 24 bed capacity and cares for a variety of patients. Care for the trauma patient includes those who have had trauma related accidents, blunt or penetrating trauma, bone and joint injuries, spinal trauma, or traumatic brain injuries. Care for surgical patients includes those who have had solid organ transplants (liver and kidney), abdominal surgeries, and a variety of other surgical interventions that may require additional monitoring in an ICU. Care for the cardiovascular patients includes those who have had coronary artery bypass grafting, heart valve repair or replacement, thoracotomy, carotid endarterectomy, or a variety of vascular related interventions. The unit also cares for patients who have experienced a myocardial infarction and require cardiac catheterization, congestive heart failure or aortic aneurysm pathway patients. Specialized equipment that may be used includes intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), induced hypothermia, pulmonary artery catheter monitoring, and external ventricular drain monitoring. Education is provided to staff that includes the basic critical care course, dysrhythmia course, advanced cardiac life support certification, trauma nursing core certification, and intra-aortic balloon pump and continuous renal replacement therapy classes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN)
  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in the field of nursing, with at least 3 years of experience in a supervisory capacity
  • Employees in this role must be fitted for, capable of donning and performing routine tasks in personal protective equipment to include N95 masks, Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR) or Controlled Air Purifying Respirators (CAPR).

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates effective analytical abilities to identify clinic/unit needs that require intervention/or revision.
  • Serves as a liaison with Director and Administration, exchanging information and identifying problems or needs related to clinical activity.
  • Maintains awareness of clinic/unit status and potential problems by functioning as a working supervisor.
  • Supervises and implements Quality Assurance studies, provides reports to appropriate personnel, analyzes and identifies critical factors of patient care to facilitate enhancement of the quality of patient care offered.
  • Demonstrates cost-conscious awareness by comparing/analyzing clinic/unit expenditures monthly against general ledger and effectively utilizing staff, space, and supplies within budgetary restraints.
  • Assumes responsibility for successfully fulfilling the standards of licensing and crediting agencies.
  • Plans measurable clinic/unit-related goals and objectives as guidelines for performance.
  • Conducts annual needs assessment with staff.
  • Participates in formal development of maintenance, capital equipment and staff budgets.
  • Develops, interprets, and implements policies, guidelines, protocol, job descriptions, and performance appraisals annually.
  • Coordinates scheduling of leave time.
  • Submits documented plan for any physical plant renovation or repair as necessary.
  • Participates on ad hoc committees, as required, to develop plans related to clinic/unit issues.
  • Maintains a current awareness of the abilities and limitations of each staff member.
  • Implements good managerial judgment by conducting all aspects of supervision in a fair, consistent, objective, and professional manner.
  • Maintains adequate staffing pattern, adjusting assignments and coordination with other Managers as necessary.
  • Initiates purchase of new equipment and supplies.
  • Prepares statistical/narrative reports as requested.
  • Produces biweekly payroll and maintains documentation of employee time benefits used.
  • Monitors and documents tardiness and absenteeism.
  • Ensuring that appropriate employees are cross-trained.
  • Uses both formal and informal evaluation processes to reward or modify employee behavior.
  • Develops an understanding of the functions of each primary campus departments.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of their interrelation in contributing to the overall function.
  • Serves as a role model for employees.
  • Evaluates compliance with standards through investigation and documentation of violation with communicated reports.
  • Takes appropriate corrective actions as required.
  • Ensures that all complaints are responded to in a timely and positive manner.
  • Promotes a positive image of the UAMS Hospital and clinic/unit.
  • Participates as a team member, supporting clinical and administrative peers in the performance of their duties.
  • Communicates accurately, clearly, and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Conducts regular monthly staff meetings to promote communication and conduct problem solving/planning.
  • Promotes positive interaction with the medical staff.
  • Investigates physician inquiries and provides responses.
  • Provides Resident and Medical Student orientation and guidance as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates an ability to create an atmosphere and conditions which foster motivation of employees to work at optimal efficiency.
  • Actively participates in career growth.
  • Attends 100% mandatory in-services and 80% management meetings in accordance with policy.
  • Serves as a consultant for new Clinical Services Managers.
  • Develops a plan for learning, to include 16-hours of management-related continuing education.
  • Participates in projects, as assigned by the Director.
  • Participates on committees/collaborates with committee representatives.
  • Other duties as assigned
