About The Position

The Clinical Secretary II functions as the focal communication point in the department and is responsible for all clerical and receptionist activities. The Clinical Secretary II also monitors the cardiac telemetry screens for changes in rate and rhythm and responds appropriately.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Typing, word processing, and data entry experience required.
  • Excellent customer service skills and communication skills (oral and written) required.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and perform duties independently with little supervision required.
  • Ability to adjust to constant changing working situations required.
  • Competence in basic cardiac dysrhythmia interpretation required, will train.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum one year work experience in hospital or business setting-preferred.
  • Proficiency with medical terminology-preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the integrity of each patient’s medical record, including assembling paper components, scanning documentation into the electronic medical record, printing identification, keeping the chart in order, filing diagnostic reports, witnessing consent forms, and monitoring chart locations.
  • Communicate orders and information to other departments via phone, fax, pneumatic tube system, or computer message; schedule procedures with outside agencies; initiate appropriate forms for admission, discharge, transfer, and consultation; place orders for special equipment and supplies; process charges and credits; and review unprocessed orders.
  • Maintain current patient information to facilitate efficient and safe patient care delivery, including updating communication boards/log books, updating patient information in the computer system, collaborating with other departments on admissions, discharges, and transfers, and scheduling procedures and transfers with outside agencies.
  • Assist internal and external customers by greeting and directing patients, visitors, and hospital personnel; receiving and directing phone calls; answering patient call lights and directing requests; facilitating communication regarding patient care activities and location; referring requests to nursing staff or other personnel; facilitating communication during emergencies and STAT requests; and communicating messages and patient care information.
  • Monitor cardiac telemetry screens for changes in rate and rhythm, recognizing and identifying cardiac rhythms, notifying the Registered Nurse of changes/abnormalities/alarms, generating rhythm strips, changing monitoring parameters as directed, troubleshooting monitor problems, and cleaning the monitor.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient workstation, maintaining adequate quantities of forms, supplies, and equipment, and maintaining equipment in proper working order.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Registered Nurse in charge.
  • Participate on department or hospital committees as requested.
  • Attend and participate in inservices and meetings related to job description.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in staffing patterns and resolution of staffing conflicts.
  • Participate in temporary assignment measures, including floating to other departments and working various shifts.
