About The Position

Casey House is seeking a Clinical Scholar (Nursing) to join their team in Toronto, ON on a contract, full-time basis, ending March 31, 2027. This role involves 37.5 hours per week, with shifts including days, evenings, and nights, and is a fully on-site position. Reporting to the Chief Nursing Officer, the Clinical Scholar is an experienced Registered Nurse responsible for providing mentorship to new graduate nurses, internationally trained nurses, nursing students, clinical externs, and nurses seeking to upskill. The goal is to support their nursing practice and integration into the clinical area. The Clinical Scholar plays a vital role in advancing nursing practice, fostering clinical excellence, and supporting a culture of continuous learning and compassionate care within Casey House's mission of providing exceptional, holistic health care to people living with or at risk of HIV. This role is for a dynamic and experienced Registered Nurse passionate about mentorship, education, and evidence-informed practice, serving as a leader, educator, and advocate to support high-quality, client-centered care.

Requirements

  • Current registration and in good standing Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) in the General Class.
  • Current Basic Life Support training.
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical (frontline) nursing experience in a hospital clinical setting in a medical, surgical, mental health, and/or emergency department, HIV/AIDS care or community setting.
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience and comfort in working with individuals who use substances, have an active mental health condition or are experiencing homelessness, or are sex workers.
  • Excellent clinical skills and competencies.
  • Outstanding communication skills, oral and written, with the ability to have difficult and supportive conversations that exemplify Casey House purpose, values, and philosophy of care.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide exceptional leadership, mentorship, coaching, and applying principles of adult learning and evidence-based practice.
  • Enthusiasm for teaching, continuous learning, and nursing that inspires and motivates others.
  • Demonstrated ability as a role model and collaborative team player.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and be self-motivated.
  • Adaptive problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Knowledge of mental health issues, harm reduction and the impacts of experiences such as colonization, violence and trauma on individuals and communities.
  • Knowledge of health and social service providers in downtown Toronto.
  • Evidence of continuing education and commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Excellent attendance record.

Nice To Haves

  • A Master’s degree in Nursing is considered an asset.
  • Certification in a relevant specialization (e.g. HIV/ AIDS care, mental health) is considered an asset.
  • Experience working in primary care environments is an asset.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office and EPIC is an asset, as well as proven experience working with an electronic health record and understanding of PHIPA and other privacy regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide bedside/direct teaching, coaching, and mentorship to nursing staff, clinical externs, internationally trained nurses, and students.
  • Model and promote empathetic, trauma-informed care that respects the dignity and lived experiences of every client.
  • Provide an ongoing presence on the clinical units to support the ongoing development of staff.
  • Track and document skillset achievements of nursing staff.
  • Provide ongoing monitoring and evaluation of new graduate and current nursing staff to upskill.
  • Create learning goals and objectives for nursing staff.
  • Support the development of clinical competencies and critical thinking skills.
  • Promote and integrate evidence-based practices into clinical care.
  • Lead or support quality improvement initiatives and practice change projects.
  • Collaborate with interprofessional teams to evaluate and implement best practices.
  • Support new nurses to practice to the full scope of their designation.
  • Support in evaluating and advancing nurses’ competencies and reporting concerns.
  • Act as a role model for professional nursing practice and ethical care.
  • Work closely with the CNO, Directors, Charge Nurses, Educator, Staff, volunteers, Peers, Physicians, and the interdisciplinary team.
