About The Position

WellTheory is hiring its first Clinical Research Scientist to build the company’s research function and generate rigorous evidence about its personalized nutrition- and lifestyle-based care for people with autoimmune conditions. This is a hands-on, senior individual-contributor role with influence over how the program develops. The scientist will own the research agenda end to end, including study design and analysis, publications, collaborations, and translating findings into commercial evidence and improvements to care.

Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent research doctorate in epidemiology, health services research, outcomes research, biostatistics, public health, nutrition science, or a related field; exceptional MS/MPH candidates with deep industry experience and a strong publication record are also welcome.
  • Experience applying real-world evidence methods, such as propensity score matching, difference-in-differences, and interrupted time series, to claims data such as MarketScan, Optum, or HealthVerity.
  • Industry experience in digital health, a payer, or life sciences, or a clear track record of applied, decision-oriented research.
  • Fluency in Python, R, or SQL.
  • A pragmatic understanding of when an RCT is appropriate and how to build rigorous evidence from available data.
  • Familiarity with commercial uses of evidence, such as employer RFPs and health plan clinical reviews.
  • Comfort serving as the sole domain expert and working across clinical, product, and data teams.
  • Current work authorization in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in autoimmune disease, rheumatology, dermatology, GI, or endocrinology.
  • Familiarity with nutrition and lifestyle interventions as clinical care.
  • Experience at an early- or growth-stage digital health company.
  • Prior experience building a research or evidence function from scratch.
  • Existing relationships with key opinion leaders in autoimmune care.

Responsibilities

  • Design and run observational studies using member data, including matched cohorts, pre/post analyses, propensity-scored comparisons, and interrupted time series.
  • Analyze medical and pharmacy claims, including utilization, biologic and biosimilar trends, and cost of care.
  • Write statistical analysis plans and conduct analyses in Python, R, or SQL, partnering with the data team to scale the work.
  • Publish as a first or senior author in journals read by clinicians, payers, and digital health peers.
  • Present research at meetings such as ACR, DDW, AAD, and AMCP.
  • Lead external collaborations with health plans, employers, and academic partners as WellTheory’s principal investigator, including protocols and IRB submissions.
  • Manage regulatory requirements for studies, including IRB review.
  • Work with care and product teams to translate findings into updated protocols and a more personalized member experience.
  • Help shape how structured data—including symptoms, adherence, biomarkers, and PROs—is captured to support future studies.
  • Help define the autoimmune population and cohort logic.
  • Create white papers and one-pagers for commercial and partnership teams to use with prospects.
  • Represent WellTheory as its scientific voice in health plan clinical reviews and payer conversations.

Benefits

  • Meaningful equity and benefits.
  • Fully remote company that gathers annually for a retreat.
