About The Position

Supports and initiates a wide variety of clinical research activities including informed consent, monitoring compliance with research protocols and regulatory requirements, coordination of therapy- and research-related care, and the collection, recording, reporting, and dissemination of research and program information. Areas of focus include maintaining knowledge of research protocols, patient/family education, compliance with internal and external requirements for human subject research, and education of physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and clinical research staff. Data management responsibilities are accomplished in partnership with research coordinator staff and include patient tracking and reporting as required by individual protocols. Functions with demonstrated expertise and advanced knowledge in the delivery of direct and indirect nursing care to children, adolescents, and young adults clinical trials. The Translational Research Unit (TRU) Research Nurse will provide nursing coordination and oversight for TRU research protocols that take place both in the TRU clinic and inpatient setting. TRU research protocols originate from a variety of sources including: local provider driven research, nursing research, pharmaceutical research under the oversight of a local provider, and PhD driven research. The TRU nurse will help coordinate nursing research activities for the TRU team to ensure consistent patient care and oversight throughout the study. The nurse will utilize the growth and development principles for all age groups (neonate through geriatric) within the context of the research process.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with an ADN or a BSN in order to meet the recommended entry level for a professional nurse (or equivalent academic and/or professional experience) required
  • 2+ years of experience in pediatric nursing required
  • Patient care management experience required for the coordination of complex research protocols.
  • Analytical skills necessary to assess complex study patients and protocols to develop comprehensive plans of care.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to interact effectively with interdisciplinary health team members and consumers.
  • The ability to represent the organization and serve consumers in a professional manner and promote a positive image of the department and its services.
  • Mental and sensory abilities to read, process, and interpret clinical data.
  • Computer skills to keep required research records, make clinic appointments, and enter orders.
  • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council required
  • License RN-Registered Nurse (30) - State of Wisconsin required

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred or relevant experience
  • BSN, PIV, and critical care/urgent care experience preferred or relevant education
  • Experience with EPIC, WORD, EXCEL, and Outlook, desired.
  • Ability to rotate shifts and/or work flexible hours, as needed, to meet protocol needs.
  • PALS-Pediatric Advanced Life Support - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council

  • Starts IV’s and performs phlebotomy with high accuracy and proficiency for blood draws and research medications.
  • Works collaboratively with internal and external departments, divisions, colleges, and universities to ensure delivery of services needed for each research protocol.
  • Practices with a high level of accountability and notifies appropriate personnel of any complications or deviations to study procedures.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates a plan of care for research studies that is collaborative and addresses the needs of both the research team and the patient and family resulting in optimal patient outcomes.
  • Communicates in manner most appropriate for child and family; identifies and acts upon what matters most for our patients and families; makes independent nursing decisions and integrates into research plan of care; and understands and satisfies the needs of the neonatal, infant, toddler, pre-school, school-age, adolescent, adult and/or geriatric patient in regards to their growth and development process.
  • Arranges lab work, clinic appointments, tests or procedures as prescribed by specific research protocol.
  • Identifies and assists with resolutions of problems or obstacles in the systems/procedures in the research process.
  • Consistently communicates appropriate information to the TRU Manager to ensure research activities are conducted within the Federal Code of Regulations and Good Clinical Practice.
  • Maintains patient and study confidentiality.
  • Utilizes the Synergy model of care to embrace both the science and art of nursing.
  • Participates in professional activities which enhance knowledge of current nursing trends in Research.
  • Coordinates care in conjunction with other care givers, physicians and other disciplines; acts as a resource/advocate to others for specific patients/families.
