Research Nurses are responsible for coordinating the clinical care of research patients and ensuring research patient safety. Oncology clinical trial drugs have varying levels of toxicity, and Research Nurses are responsible for monitoring and assessing patient responses and adverse events. Research Nurses educate patients on drug safety and keep clinical research coordinators, physicians and clinical staff appraised on patient status. Each Research Nurse works with an average of 8-20 active patients on 8-15 active studies, depending on the complexity and phase of the clinical trial. The Research Nurse is involved in the clinical research process from the time of the site evaluation visit, site initiation visit and start up, all the way to patients completing treatment on a trial.
