About The Position

The Clinical Research Coordinator coordinates and completes defined elements of professional clinical research work supporting the day to day execution of clinical research studies conducted at the British Columbia Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU). Working under the general direction of the Principal Investigator(s) and in collaboration with multidisciplinary research teams, the incumbent ensures that assigned research activities are completed in accordance with approved study protocols, institutional policies, ethical standards, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines and applicable regulatory requirements. The Clinical Research Coordinator coordinates participant recruitment and retention activities; facilitates study visits; maintains essential study and regulatory documentation; collects, monitors and manages clinical research data; supports ethics and regulatory submissions; and manage study timelines, recruitment targets and project milestones. The incumbent also serves as a liaison among investigators, study participants, sponsors and collaborating partners. The position contributes to the effective implementation and completion of clinical research studies focused on substance use, addiction medicine and related health outcomes. This position is located at the British Columbia Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU), a provincially networked organization with a mandate to develop, implement and evaluate evidence based approaches to substance use and addiction. As a University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine Centre, the BCCSU’s vision is to transform substance use policies and care in British Columbia by translating research into education and evidence based clinical care guidance. Through the collaborative development of evidence based policies, guidelines and standards, the BCCSU seeks to improve the integration of best practices across the continuum of substance use care. The BCCSU carries out this mandate through three integrated functions: research and evaluation, education and training, and clinical care guidance. The Clinical Research Coordinator reports to the Principal Investigator(s) and works closely with the Research Manager, clinicians, research staff, students and community partners. The position is primarily located at the Rapid Access Addiction Clinic at St. Paul’s Hospital and the BC Centre on Substance Use, with some flexibility for hybrid work.

Requirements

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated commitment to enhancing one’s awareness, knowledge and skills related to equity, diversity and inclusion.

Nice To Haves

Undergraduate degree in health sciences, life sciences, nursing, public health, psychology, social sciences or another related discipline.
Relevant clinical research experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of clinical research principles, Good Clinical Practice, research ethics and applicable regulatory requirements.
Experience coordinating clinical research studies, including participant recruitment and retention, informed consent processes, study visits, data collection and study documentation.
Experience working with electronic data capture systems and research databases, such as REDCap.
Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple studies, manage competing priorities and meet established deadlines.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary research teams.
Knowledge of substance use, addiction medicine, harm reduction and the social determinants of health is considered an asset.
Experience working with diverse and marginalized populations and a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, cultural safety and trauma informed approaches are highly desirable.
Certification in Good Clinical Practice and/or certification as a Clinical Research Professional is considered a strong asset.

Responsibilities

Coordinates the day to day execution of clinical research study activities in accordance with protocols, Good Clinical Practice, institutional policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
Manage participant recruitment and retention activities and screens, recruits and enrolls eligible study participants.
Manage informed consent procedures and ensures that required consent documentation is accurately completed and maintained.
Schedules and conducts study visits, assessments, questionnaires and follow up activities in accordance with established study protocols.
Collects, records, analyze and manages clinical and research data, ensuring its accuracy, completeness, confidentiality and timely entry.
Maintains regulatory binders, case report forms, source documents and other essential study records in accordance with study and regulatory requirements.
Assists with the preparation and submission of research ethics applications, renewals, amendments and other study related regulatory documentation.
Manage study progress, participant retention, recruitment targets, timelines and coordinate project milestones.
Identifies and resolves day to day operational issues that may affect study timelines, participant retention or the achievement of study objectives.
Coordinates communication among investigators, research staff, sponsors, collaborating partners and study participants and serves as a liaison regarding study activities and requirements.
Ensures adherence to approved study protocols and assists with quality assurance, monitoring and audit preparation activities.
Maintains study databases, performs routine data quality checks and resolves data queries to support accurate and complete research records.
Assists with the preparation of research reports, presentations, manuscripts, knowledge translation materials and sponsor deliverables.
Assists with training research personnel on established study procedures and documentation requirements, as needed.
Performs other research and administrative duties related to the effective conduct and completion of clinical research studies.
