About The Position

This role involves participation in ongoing clinical research projects focused on complex corneal and external diseases. The employee will gain experience in study design, REDCap-based data management, biostatistics, regulatory processes, manuscript preparation, and the implementation of multicenter clinical studies. The position includes participation in weekly laboratory meetings, grand rounds, monthly Kodachrome conferences, and journal clubs. Additionally, the role involves periodic observation of clinical care in the Cornea and External Disease clinics at UCSF. A significant component of this fellowship is participation in international collaborative research with investigators in India, contributing to studies of fungal keratitis, including the FANCY clinical trial and planning for future adaptive platform trials in infectious keratitis. This offers exposure to clinical research in diverse healthcare settings and an understanding of global health challenges and international research collaboration. The role also includes participation in studies investigating decentralized approaches to dry eye disease research, focusing on remote patient assessment and biologic sample collection to expand research access and facilitate innovative study methods.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, public health, psychology, neuroscience, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Basic analytical and quantitative skills
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn research databases and software
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work both independently and collaboratively

Nice To Haves

  • Previous research experience in clinical, epidemiologic, or public health research
  • Experience with REDCap, Excel, or statistical software
  • Experience with scientific writing and literature review

Responsibilities

  • Conducts clinical research activities related to corneal and external disease studies.
  • Collects, organizes, and analyzes research data.
  • Performs REDCap database management and quality control.
  • Assists with regulatory documentation and study implementation.
  • Supports multicenter and international clinical research projects focused on infectious keratitis and ocular surface disease.
  • Coordinates communication with collaborators.
  • Performs literature review.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Contributes to project planning and execution.
  • Performs analytical studies and data summarization to support ongoing clinical trials and research initiatives.
  • Executes continuous research and data analysis responsibilities.
  • Assists with interpretation and presentation of findings.
  • Assists with preparation of abstracts, manuscripts, presentations, research proposals, and other scientific documentation.
  • Conducts literature searches.
  • Prepares preliminary analyses of scientific and regulatory information.
  • Participates in program planning and collaboration with faculty, fellows, and project staff.
  • Attends research meetings, grand rounds, journal clubs, and conferences relevant to program objectives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including administrative support for research activities and special projects.
