About The Position

The Clinical Practice Manager/Clinical Nurse Specialist (CPM/CNS) demonstrates excellence in clinical nursing by serving as a professional role model, expert consultant, educator, and resource in managing and developing clinical nursing practice. In collaboration with the nursing director/manager and nursing staff, assesses, plans, designs, organizes, implements and evaluates the professional development and educational activities to address identified or anticipated needs of learners. Leads and collaborates with leadership and interdisciplinary teams to partner for practice transitions, improve the quality, safety, and outcomes of patient care. Analyze clinical and non-clinical variables to influence, supervise, manage or oversee patient care needs, and predict and manage responses and resources. Actively participates in research creating a culture of scientific inquiry and evidence-based practice. Demonstrates excellence in providing direct and indirect nursing care to patients and their families, as required. Aligns with the mission, vision and values, and strategic goals of the organization. Oversees non-union and union staff. CPM/CNS will be required to flex their schedule to meet the orientation and education needs of the nursing staff and orientees.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in healthcare field required
  • Master’s degree in nursing (MSN) preferred
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing with work-in-progress toward MSN degree will be considered.
  • Clinical Nurse Specialist preferred.
  • Must have and maintain current licensure in the State of Rhode Island.
  • A minimum of five to seven years demonstrated progressive nursing leadership or education roles required.
  • Must have and maintain credentials required for clinical area, which may include ACLS, BLS, and NRP. (If, NRP is required for clinical area, must obtain instructor status within the first year of employment).
  • Certification in specialty area is required or must be achieved within the first year of employment.
  • Membership in professional nursing organization required or must be achieved within the first year of employment.
  • Excellent human relations, verbal, and written communication skills required.
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation computer software required.
  • Teaching experience is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates competency, individually and as part of the multidisciplinary team, in performing clinical care and assessment of all patient populations.
  • Complies with patient safety issues as defined by the Joint Commission patient safety goals.
  • Performs and documents a comprehensive assessment of patient needs using unit-specific assessment forms.
  • Administers medications as per nursing care policies.
  • Provides on-going patient/family education.
  • Consistently promotes standards of care by using them as a framework for education and promotion of excellence.
  • Effectively serves as a model for the nursing staff.
  • Addresses the need for a review of standards to nursing staff.
  • Remains cognizant of deficiencies in the nursing practice and seeks out innovative solutions to manage and improve deficiencies.
  • Suggests modifications to practices and procedures due to changes in technology, evidence, or research.
  • Develops, facilitates, conducts and evaluates orientation programs for nursing and clinical support staff.
  • Updates and revises orientation programs and materials and submits yearly content for binding/storage.
  • Maintains a high level of organizational skills and visibility with orientee and preceptor.
  • Communicates with nurse director/manager regarding orientee evaluation.
  • Supervise orientation activities including preceptors and nurses in similar roles.
  • In collaboration with the nurse director/manager, assist in corrective action plans.
  • Performs needs assessment, customizes in-services and develops continuing education programs.
  • Conducts assessment of learning needs of staff, reevaluating and adjusting as needed on an annual basis.
  • Develops teaching/educational programs to meet staff needs resulting from needs assessment.
  • Demonstrates effective teaching skills through a variety of instructional methodologies and techniques.
  • Clearly states objectives for learning, establishing a good rapport with participants and encouraging a desire to learn.
  • Uses effective teaching skills and varied instructional methodologies to make presentation interesting, adapting well to various classroom situations and learner's needs.
  • Incorporates principles of adult and intergenerational education and applies adult learning theory when conducting programs.
  • Integrates creative problem-solving into teaching style.
  • Leads and collaborates with leadership and the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Provides nurse-to-nurse consultation as needed.
  • Perform education for existing nursing and healthcare staff.
  • Provides coverage to ambulatory service lines.
  • Participates in committee meetings/work.
  • Works in collaboration with nurse directors/managers, assistant nurse managers, and attends unit management meetings on a regular basis, and nursing leadership meetings as applicable.
  • Utilizes additional resources within the entire health care group as needed.
  • Shared coverage with other CPM/CNS colleagues to ensure coverage of initiative rollouts, continuity of programming and hospital initiatives.
  • Collaborates with leadership in the assessment, development and evaluation of care and practice standards
  • Provides input to nurse directors/managers on evaluation of care, as needed.
  • Develops programming to meet required clinical competencies and regulatory requirements.
  • In collaboration with nurse directors/managers, provides input on performance evaluations.
  • Actively participates in research creating a culture of scientific inquiry and evidence-based practice.
  • Preserves and protects employee and patient rights to confidentiality.
  • Discusses employee and patient information only when related to job responsibilities.
  • Treats employee and patient files, records, and other documents with the utmost security.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required or requested.
  • Maintains membership in applicable professional nursing organization.
  • Keeps abreast of developments in area of expertise to maintain and enhance knowledge and skills.
  • Maintains awareness of hospital policies and procedures, pro-actively consulting with staff and supervisor on changes concerning area.
  • Participates in policy development.
  • Participates in quality assurance/quality improvement initiatives in department as requested.
  • Cooperatively assists with special projects in area as requested by supervisor.
