About The Position

The Clinical Phlebotomy Preceptor supervises, mentors, and provides practical instruction to US Colleges Phlebotomy students during clinical externships at an affiliated healthcare facility. The role helps students apply classroom knowledge in a real-world clinical environment while supporting patient safety, professional conduct, and compliance with facility policies and procedures. The Preceptor collaborates with US Colleges and the clinical site to promote students’ clinical competence, confidence, and professional growth. The Preceptor provides hands-on instruction, evaluates student performance, documents competencies and attendance, orients students to the facility, and communicates student progress or concerns to the Directors of Externship and Education. The position also requires reporting safety concerns or incidents and maintaining compliance with facility policies, HIPAA, OSHA standards, and US Colleges requirements.

Requirements

Current certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) or equivalent credential, as required by state regulations.
At least two years of recent phlebotomy experience in a clinical or hospital setting.
Proficiency in venipuncture, capillary collection, specimen handling, and patient care.
Excellent communication, leadership, and mentoring skills.
Ability to evaluate student performance objectively and provide constructive feedback.
Knowledge of HIPAA, OSHA, infection prevention, and patient safety standards.
Ability to work collaboratively with healthcare staff and students.
Strong clinical judgment and technical expertise.
Effective interpersonal and coaching skills.
Excellent organizational and documentation abilities.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
Ability to foster an inclusive, respectful, and positive learning environment.

Responsibilities

Supervise and mentor phlebotomy students during assigned clinical rotations.
Provide hands-on instruction in phlebotomy techniques, infection control, specimen collection, patient identification, safety practices, and professional communication.
Ensure students perform clinical skills in accordance with facility policies, industry standards, and applicable regulations.
Evaluate student performance through observation, coaching, and constructive feedback.
Complete student competency evaluations, attendance records, and performance documentation accurately and promptly.
Verify that students meet clinical competencies and procedure requirements established by US Colleges.
Encourage professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and ethical behavior in the clinical setting.
Foster a positive, respectful, supportive learning environment.
Communicate with the Director of Externship and Director of Education about student progress, concerns, attendance issues, and performance deficiencies.
Immediately report student safety concerns, policy violations, or incidents to the appropriate clinical supervisor and US Colleges representative.
Orient students to facility workflow, safety procedures, emergency protocols, and departmental expectations.
Model excellent patient care, customer service, communication, and professionalism.
Maintain compliance with facility policies, HIPAA regulations, OSHA standards, and US Colleges requirements.
Participate in preceptor training, meetings, and educational updates as requested.
Perform other duties related to student supervision as assigned.
