About The Position

This position supports clinical pharmacy services in the Emergency Department (ED), providing real-time pharmacotherapy expertise in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. The ED specialist collaborates with emergency medicine providers to ensure safe and effective medication use, supports rapid response, codes, and contributes to departmental initiatives focused on ED care. Responsibilities include bedside support, medication reconciliation, therapeutic interventions, and precepting pharmacy learners in the ED setting. Non-direct patient care activities may include cost savings initiatives, committee involvement, and participation in departmental projects and practice advancement efforts.

Requirements

• PGY1 and PGY2 from an ASHP-accredited residency program OR PGY1 with 5 years of progressive clinical practice experience.
• Bachelor's Degree of Science degree or PharmD from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy.
• 5 years progressive clinical practice experience within specialty with PGY1 from an ASHP-accredited residency program OR 8 years progressive clinical practice experience within specialty.
• Computer skills and data entry experience.
• English (speaking, reading, writing).
• Good general health and stress coping ability.
• Moderate physical effort: prolonged standing/walking, occasional lifting/carrying (up to 25 lbs.), reaching, bending, crouching, etc.
• BLS certification (American Heart Association or American Red Cross accredited) Upon Hire.
• Eligible for licensure by Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) Upon Hire.
• Texas license with TSBP within 30 days of date of hire.
• ACLS certification (American Heart Association or American Red Cross accredited) required for inpatient positions prior to or within 6 months of employment. Upon Hire.

Responsibilities

• Provides real-time pharmacotherapy expertise in the Emergency Department (ED).
• Collaborates with emergency medicine providers to ensure safe and effective medication use.
• Supports rapid response and codes.
• Contributes to departmental initiatives focused on ED care.
• Performs bedside support, medication reconciliation, and therapeutic interventions.
• Precepts pharmacy learners in the ED setting.
• Engages in non-direct patient care activities such as cost savings initiatives, committee involvement, and departmental projects.
• Develops and implements processes to meet JCAHO and regulatory requirements.
• Coordinates staff training, competencies, certification, and continued education specific to the specialty.
• Assists clinical staff pharmacists with therapeutic monitoring, patient assessments, interpretation of lab values, TPN assessment, and pharmacokinetic calculations.
• Identifies opportunities for process improvements and develops/implements policies and procedures for patient care.
• Promotes pharmacy services through multidisciplinary in-services, meetings, publications, and consultations.
• Participates in the education and experiential training of pharmacy students and residents.
• Manages P&T initiatives, monitors documented interventions, verifies data, develops measures, and reports outcomes.
• Supports cost savings initiatives and participates in the assessment and selection of cost-effective pharmaceuticals.
• Reviews formulary addition requests and develops monographs.
• Manages the formulary system and procedures for acquisition of non-formulary products.
• Works and problem-solves independently and effectively, making sound decisions and using good judgment.
• Maintains competency in multiple areas through cross-training.
• Mentors clinical staff pharmacists and supportive personnel, delegates tasks, and evaluates performance.
• Represents the Pharmacy Department at P&T Committee and Service Line Meetings.
• Performs computer order entry accurately and timely.
• Reviews and updates medication profiles (therapies, allergies, height, weight, etc.) and is cognizant of patient charges.
• Reviews medication orders for therapeutic appropriateness, duplications, interactions, effectiveness, and safety, documenting interventions.
• Enhances personal growth and development through educational programs, literature searches, and meetings.
• Participates in new employee orientation, training, and evaluations.
