Requirements

  • A completed ACPE application
  • An admission interview with a qualified interviewer
  • Graduation from high school/completion of GED or ordination by a religious/spiritual tradition or commission to function in spiritual care by an appropriate religious/spiritual authority as determined by ACPE.

Responsibilities

  • Responds for emergencies, traumas, deaths, code blues, end-of-life decisions, ethical conflicts, crisis, and disasters within 30 minutes of request.
  • Assesses patient needs for spiritual support and provides necessary services and interventions.
  • Assists with family conflicts and personal relationships for patients, guests and staff.
  • Coordinates pre-surgery and surgery support to patients and guests and provides routine patient visitation.
  • Maintains accurate documentation in patient charts, department logs, and hospital reporting systems.
  • Communicates between department staff to ensure continuous service of patient needs.
  • Attends and participates in department staff meetings.
  • Provides spiritual support resources appropriate to developmental, emotional and psychological needs of patients, guest and staff.
  • Administers to sacramental needs of patients, guests and staff.
  • Facilitates contacting patient's own clergy.
  • Provides worship opportunities for patients, guests and staff.
  • Serves as advocate and educational resource for spiritual and ethical concerns for patients, guest and staff.
  • Participates in on-going professional development including supervision, spiritual direction, continuing education and retreats.
  • Provides consultation service to staff on specific patient needs.
  • Provides referral to outside resources for additional support and counseling in collaboration with social work, nursing, and /or other members of health care team.
  • Provides education to staff on utilization of Spiritual Care, ethics, Advance Directives, and other needs as requested.
  • Provides community education as requested.
  • Networks with area religious congregations.
  • Assists with training of new intern, supplemental, and volunteer chaplains.
  • Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the Spiritual Care area.
  • Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.
  • Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements and trends in the field of Spiritual Care by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, and participating fully in the CPE educational process and integrating knowledge gained into current work practices.
