This position serves as a resource to nursing staff throughout the hospital, with full authority to make decisions regarding nursing practice within the framework of established policies. In emergency situations, the supervisor can make broader decisions as a member of hospital administration and utilize on-call resources as needed. Requirements

  • BSN
  • Current license to practice nursing in Massachusetts.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ current experience in an acute care/tertiary care facility.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a clinical preceptor and/or resource role.
  • Demonstrated Leadership potential.
  • Sound knowledge of current general nursing theories and techniques.
  • Knowledge of current management principles.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates the implementation of the nursing process by providing support and direction, acting as a clinical and administrative resource person. Assumes operational administrative authority in emergency situations.
  • Oversees and coordinates the work of nursing personnel in the absence of the responsible nurse manager or clinical director/associate director of nursing. Assumes responsibility for incoming sick calls and unit notifications. Assigns/reassigns nursing personnel, including critical care and acute care float personnel, based on patient acuity and staffing changes. Anticipates patient care needs for upcoming shifts and takes appropriate action. Directs nursing staff to appropriate resource personnel for patient care problem management.
  • Assigns one-on-one Observation Assistants and maintains an up-to-date list of patients requiring one-on-one observation (University Campus).
  • Utilizes non-nursing, on-call personnel as appropriate (Memorial Campus).
  • Responsible for bed management/admission process in the absence of the admission controller and in conjunction with UMMHC, physicians, Life flight, outlying/affiliated health care systems, and the admissions department.
  • Identifies intra/interdepartmental problems and collaborates with appropriate managers to resolve them.
