About The Position

The Clinical Nursing Student provides nursing care for hospital patients in accordance with established standards and practices and the S.C. Nurse Practice Act. The Summer Student Nurse Extern program requires an 8–10-week commitment, working 24–36 hours per week from May through July. Applicants should identify their top three specialty-area interests, in order of preference, from ICU, ED, WIC, and OR/Periop in their cover letter. Applications will be reviewed in December. Selected candidates will be contacted to arrange interviews in late December 2026 through early January 2027; interviews are scheduled for the second week of January 2027.

Requirements

Currently enrolled in an accredited Baccalaureate Nursing program and anticipate graduating within one year of completing the Student Nurse Extern program.
Minimum GPA of 3.0.
Complete nursing fundamentals and a medical-surgical clinical course, or equivalent, before the program begins.
Hold a current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider Card.
Ability to use office equipment such as telephones and computer terminals.
Ability to use clinical equipment such as infusion pumps and suction devices.
Knowledge of patient-care tasks and techniques, organizational policies and procedures, and common safety hazards and precautions.
Ability to react calmly and effectively in nursing situations and communicate clearly.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
