About The Position

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) role with the Trauma Critical Care team is located at Trinity Health Grand Rapids. POSITION SUMMARY Consistent with the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice and the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (2004) Statement on Clinical Nurse Specialist Practice and Education, under general supervision of the Clinical Service Director and in collaboration with the Clinical Service Leadership Team is responsible and accountable for advancing the standard of nursing practice within three spheres of influence: patient, nurses and nursing practice, and organizations and systems through expert clinical practice, education, consultation, systems leadership, serving as a change agent, collaboration and research. Functions with a high level of independent judgment, using skills and knowledge acquired through advanced education and experience to enhance patient care. Contributes expert clinical nursing perspective to organizational planning and decision-making using expert knowledge, problem solving skills, evaluation, collaboration, leadership, and role modeling.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in nursing with clinical focus in area of specialty.
  • Current RN License in State of Michigan.
  • Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with an approved certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is required. Acceptable CNS certifications include: Adult Health, Pediatric Nursing, Gerontological Nursing, Public/ Community Health Nursing, Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health, Child/ Adolescent Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and Women's Health Nurse Practitioner (approved by National Certification Corporation)
  • Demonstrated clinical experience including a minimum of two years of concentrated clinical experience in the area of specialty.

Responsibilities

  • Develops criteria for and evaluates the quality and effectiveness of practice within the spheres of influence: the patient, nursing, and nursing practice, and organization and systems.
  • Directly interacts with patients, families, and groups of patients to promote health or well-being and improve quality of life. Characterized by a holistic perspective in the advanced nursing management of health, illness, and disease states.
  • Consults with and seeks opportunities to advise nurses and other health care team members in the care of the complex patient and family by: assessing, interpreting, planning, implementing, and evaluating care. Supports consultee in the process of problem-solving based on specialized clinical expertise.
  • Acts as a resource and role model for collaboration by: mentoring nursing staff in their roles, and mentoring members of the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Influences resource utilization in order to promote safe, high quality, and cost-effective patient care aligned with the IOM Aims.
  • Provides resource for continuous quality improvement related to quality-of-care issues and efficient use of clinical resources by working with appropriate committees and management structures.
  • Collaborates with the health care team in creating a healing and caring environment through coaching and mentoring
  • Uses authentic leadership, team building, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills to manage change and lead others to influence clinical practice and processes both within and across systems.
  • Identifies educational needs related to area of specialty of:(a) nursing staff, health care providers, patients and families, (b) community, (c) Community Health Care System providers, (d) Trinity Health
  • Develops and implements formal and informal education related to area of specialty for:(a) nursing staff, health care providers, patients and families, (b) community, (c) Community Health Care System providers, (d) Trinity Health
  • Acts as a resource for institutional practice advancement, program planning, resource utilization, problem solving, and conflict resolution to: staff, administrators, other disciplines, educators, public policy makers.
  • Evaluates own practice, new modes of therapy, equipment capability and function in relation to professional standards and relevant organizations while understanding current and anticipated practice trends in specialty.
  • Demonstrates lifelong learning through maintaining knowledge of current trends and developments in patient care in area of specialty by: utilizing pertinent literature, attending related conferences and seminars, staying abreast of the activities of professional organizations.
  • Contributes to the professional development of peers, colleagues and others
  • Participates in the translation and dissemination of research and evidence-based practice; provides leadership in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of policies and procedures, standards of care, practice guidelines, and protocols.
  • Develops criteria for, continually improves and evaluates the quality and effectiveness of practice and processes by seeking ways to eliminate and reduce waste and rework.
  • Contributes to the positive image of nursing and enhance the magnetic culture of the organization by modeling professional behavior both in the organization and in the community.
  • Serves as a role model for professional practice as outlined in Saint Mary’s Health Care Nursing Professional Practice Model

  • Models personal and professional growth by continuing education and obtaining certification in an area of specialization.
