About The Position

The Clinical Nurse (CN) is a Registered Nurse (RN) who delivers direct patient care in an evidence-based manner, adhering to the California Nursing Practice Act, regulatory requirements, standards of care, and hospital policies. This role encompasses the entire nursing process, including patient assessment, data interpretation, care planning, implementation, and evaluation. The CN coordinates care with other providers and educates patients and families on managing their care and preventing complications, always striving for family-centered care. As a professional, the CN monitors the quality of nursing care, is responsible for their own professional development (including licensure and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification), and maintains current knowledge relevant to their patient population. Clinical Nurses contribute to the nursing profession through teaching and sharing expertise within the unit or hospital. This position is represented by the Committee for Recognition of Nursing Achievement (CRONA), an independent union for Registered Nurses at Stanford Health Care and Lucile Packard Children's Health Stanford. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification may be required by the specific cost center.

Requirements

  • 1 year of RN experience required.
  • Able to communicate effectively in English.
  • Current American Heart Association Certification for Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS).
  • Current American Heart Association Certification for Advanced Cardiac Life Support for Healthcare Providers (ACLS).
  • CA-RN (Registered Nurse).

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes Therapeutic Relationships: Creates and maintains a healing environment by being present to the patient and family, managing discomforts, providing emotional support and information, and guiding them through illness and recovery/passage to death in alignment with patient goals and culture. Mobilizes patient strengths for participation in recovery and care plan control.
  • Diagnostic and Monitoring Functions: Obtains and interprets accurate assessment data (normal vs abnormal), determines nursing diagnoses, and monitors/evaluates data based on patient stability.
  • Plans and Implements Therapeutic Interventions: Collaborates with patients, families, and healthcare team members to develop individualized care plans. Safely implements nursing and medical interventions, evaluates their effectiveness, and monitors for adverse responses/side effects.
  • Teaching and Coaching, Patient and Staff Teaching: Assesses patient and family learning needs and readiness. Provides necessary information for self-care and illness prevention, adjusting content based on patient responses, developmental levels, physiological/psychological condition, and cultural variations. Teaches other staff members informally or formally (e.g., preceptor, super-user).
  • Effective Management of Rapidly Changing Situations: Quickly grasps problem situations and responds appropriately, including identifying the need for and activating emergency protocols.
  • Monitors and Ensures Quality Healthcare Practices: Monitors own practices and assists in monitoring others for patient/employee safety and compliance with standards/policies. Identifies opportunities for continuous improvement in patient care and the work environment.
  • Organization and Work Role Functions: Integrates multiple requests and expectations by prioritizing, delegating tasks appropriately, and seeking assistance as needed.
  • Contributes to team building through participation in unit programs and meetings; contributes to positive morale, using constructive and effective conflict resolution skills.
  • Management and Delegation: Utilizes available technology for communication, documentation, and information retrieval regarding clinical situations, diagnoses, and treatments.
  • Contributes to the knowledge and skill of other nursing staff through teaching, participation in Shared Governance groups, professional publications, and/or presentations.
  • Education: Attains knowledge and competence reflecting current nursing practice and demonstrates commitment to lifelong learning.
  • Communication: Communicates effectively in various formats across all practice areas.
  • Leadership: Demonstrates leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession.
  • Professional Practice Evaluation: Evaluates own nursing practice against professional standards, guidelines, statutes, rules, and regulations.
