The Coronary Care Unit (CCU) is a 17-bed cardiac critical care unit equipped with invasive monitoring capabilities in each room. The patient population includes adult patients (18+) experiencing actual or potential life-threatening cardiac dysfunction. Credentialed Registered Professional Nurses (RPNs) in this unit provide continuous EKG monitoring for potentially life-threatening dysrhythmias and implement emergency measures according to AHA-ACLS Guidelines in the absence of a physician. Services also include monitoring and care of patients with Impella ventricular assist devices, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, Pulmonary Artery Catheters, TVPs, and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy. CCU ICU nurses are expected to implement physician orders, administer medications, start IVs, perform treatments and procedures, and document care as required. They will also order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests, assess patient needs and responses to care, apply sound nursing judgment, collaborate on patient care plans, and direct ancillary personnel while maintaining professional nursing standards.
