The D5N unit is a 21-bed neurosciences unit with one level of care, admitting patients with conditions such as ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, brain tumors, aneurysms, seizures, traumatic brain injuries, neuromuscular diseases, and other neurological system diagnoses. The unit includes 7 Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) beds where patients with seizure disorders are admitted electively for continuous EEG monitoring to identify the seizure origin. This monitoring can lead to candidacy for brain mapping and potential surgical intervention. The nurse-to-patient ratio for floor patients is typically 1:5.
