About The Position

UCI Health is a large academic health system in California, part of the University of California, Irvine. It includes multiple hospitals and a network of ambulatory care centers. UCI Health is recognized for its comprehensive cancer center, Level I adult and Level II pediatric trauma centers, and a nationally recognized burn center. It serves a large population through patient care, research, and medical education. The cardiothoracic experienced clinical nurse will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement a plan of care for critical care patients. This role ensures coordination of care between disciplines and support staff. The nurse may be assigned to care for cardiothoracic surgery patients. The position involves performing professional nursing duties, utilizing psychomotor and age-appropriate cognitive skills to assess, plan, intervene, and advocate for patients throughout their continuum of care. The nurse will evaluate patient outcomes, the effectiveness of the care plan, and readiness for discharge, revising the plan or making referrals as necessary. This role also involves acting as a role model and mentor to students and new nurses on the unit and functioning as a Patient Care Coordinator as requested.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years recent ICU nursing experience or completion of 6-month UC Irvine Medical Center Clinical Nurse I, ICU orientation in this specific ICU
  • Minimum of 1 year recent experience caring for fresh / immediate post-operative cardiac surgery patients
  • All external candidates must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Ability to work variable shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English
  • Ability to maintain flexibility and work well in a fast paced, constantly changing environment
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement a plan of care for critical care patients.

  • Evaluate patient outcomes, effectiveness of plan of care, and readiness for discharge and revise plan or make referrals as necessary.
  • Act as a role model and mentor to a variety of students and nurses new to the unit.
  • Function as a (PCC) Patient Care Coordinator as requested by the supervisor/manager.
