About The Position

The Clinical Nurse I is a professional care provider who is responsible and accountable for coordinating and providing safe, effective individualized nursing care for patients and supportive care to significant others. This role assists other professionals in implementing plans of care. The position is located in the Endoscopy department at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital and operates on a Monday-Friday shift from 9 am to 7 pm, with one rotating day off during the week. Multiple vacancies are available. The starting salary is commensurate with years of RN experience, and experience not disclosed or documented at the time of application will not be considered for initial step placement. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement, and Cook County will exhaust internal eligible applicants before considering external candidates.

Requirements

  • Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois.
  • Two (2) years of Nursing experience (required at the time of interview).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required at the time of interview).
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (required at the time of interview).

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) from a college or university.
  • One (1) year of experience in procedure rooms in an Endoscopy Department.
  • One (1) year of experience in Telemetry.
  • One (1) year of critical care experience in an acute care setting.
  • Bilingual.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies, plans, and cares for the total needs of patients, considering age-specific needs.
  • Makes appropriate and timely decisions in crisis or emergency situations.
  • Works and communicates effectively with a variety of individuals.
  • Provides general direction, guidance, and coordination of patient care given by other levels of nursing staff.
  • Applies knowledge of standard operating policies and procedures.
  • Operates equipment correctly and safely for patient care.
  • Performs cardio-pulmonary resuscitation activities.
  • Applies principles of infection control and safety.
  • Evaluates patients presenting complaints at triage.
  • Performs admission assessment on assigned patients.
  • Obtains assessment information from patients/significant others.
  • Collects assessment data for nursing diagnosis and provides age-specific care.
  • Performs peripheral IV cannulation aseptically.
  • Administers medications safely and carefully, specifically cardiac medications.
  • Performs ongoing and scheduled reassessments.
  • Performs transfer assessments on assigned patients.
  • Establishes nursing diagnosis, problems, desired outcomes, and interventions.
  • Collaborates with patient, significant other, and healthcare team in planning care for hospitalization and discharge.
  • Develops nursing plan of care consistent with other disciplines, based on patient care and nursing practice standards, considering culture, spiritual values, and age-specific needs.
  • Communicates the nursing plan of care to patient and significant others.
  • Performs interventions competently, skillfully, and safely.
  • Prioritizes interventions according to patient needs.
  • Applies principles of growth and development across the life span.
  • Provides education to patients and significant others based on assessed learning needs.
  • Provides appropriate Perioperative Teaching and Postoperative discharge instructions.
  • Performs technical aspects of care according to established practice standards.
  • Demonstrates competence in the safe and effective use of clinical equipment.
  • Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other lifesaving interventions.
  • Demonstrates competence in applying principles of standard precaution, isolation, and asepsis.
  • Evaluates patient's responses to interventions.
  • Modifies and implements interventions as appropriate.
  • Re-evaluates patient's response.
  • Records accurately, concisely, and legibly in paper or electronic format.
  • Signs documentation with legible signature and classification.
  • Performs charge nurse/team leader responsibilities when assigned.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate accurately, clearly, and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrates caring and respectful attitude in verbal and nonverbal communications.
  • Communicates pertinent information to patient, physician, nurses, and other healthcare team members.
  • Utilizes the chain of command appropriately.
  • Maintains confidentiality in patient-related information.
  • Provides privacy for patient/family.
  • Treats patient/family with respect and courtesy.
  • Takes appropriate actions to address ethical concerns.
  • Performs as resource nurse/buddy when assigned.
  • Assists new hires with information or directions.
  • Conducts CPR drills, fire drills, and patient-centered conferences.
  • Maintains certification as required in special areas of practice.
  • Renews professional license in a timely manner.
  • Attends safety, infection control in-services and maintains Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification annually.
  • Demonstrates punctuality.
