Join Barnes-Jewish Hospital's 6900 GI/GU Surgery Unit, a specialized 38-bed surgical unit committed to delivering exceptional patient care. Nurses on this unit work alongside nationally recognized GI and GU surgeons and are part of a program ranked #20 in Gastroenterology & GI Surgery by U.S. News & World Report.

6900 cares for a diverse patient population ranging from adolescents to older adults undergoing colorectal, urologic, oncologic, and reconstructive surgical procedures. As a leader in Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) practices, the unit focuses on evidence-based care that improves outcomes and supports recovery.

Featured Patient Population & Procedures:
Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis
Colon and rectal cancer
Small bowel obstruction and ileus
Prostate, kidney, and bladder cancer
Colon resections and ostomy management
TURP, TURBT, cystectomy, neobladder, and ileal conduit procedures
Reconstructive surgery and complex wound care

Responsibilities

• Promotes patient and family centered care in a healing environment.
• Educates patients and their families on how to manage their illness or injury, including post treatment home care needs and medication administration.
• Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality and regulatory compliance.
• Participates in professional development.
• Develops, implements, and documents individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with other members of the interprofessional team and patient, family or caregiver in accordance with the established guidelines and standards of nursing care.
• Proactively plans and ensures communication of the plan of care across the continuum of care.
• Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs according to standards of care.
• Assess patient preferences and barriers to involvement in care, including their values, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and population-specific needs.
• The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
