About The Position

Mater Hospital Springfield is seeking an experienced Clinical Nurse - General Surgery to join our Perioperative team in a full-time, six-month maximum-term position. You'll play a key leadership role within a busy and collaborative perioperative environment, supporting the delivery of exceptional surgical care alongside a highly skilled multidisciplinary team. While initially offered as a maximum-term contract, this role has a strong likelihood of becoming permanent, offering an excellent opportunity to build a long-term career with Mater.

Requirements

  • Current registration with AHPRA as a Registered Nurse.
  • A minimum of five years' experience as a Registered Nurse in a perioperative setting, including significant recent General Surgery experience (essential).
  • Demonstrated clinical leadership experience, with the ability to support, coach and mentor nursing teams.
  • Excellent clinical assessment, critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • A strong commitment to patient-centred care, quality improvement and clinical governance.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships across multidisciplinary teams.
  • A proactive, adaptable approach and commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification, or willingness to obtain (supported by Mater).

Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced clinical nursing care for patients undergoing General Surgery procedures.
  • Support the Nurse Unit Manager in the day-to-day leadership and operational management of the General Surgery specialty.
  • Coordinate patient care and promote positive clinical outcomes through evidence-based practice.
  • Mentor, coach and support Registered Nurses and other perioperative staff to foster professional development.
  • Contribute to workforce planning, resource allocation and efficient theatre operations.
  • Drive continuous quality improvement initiatives and support accreditation and clinical governance activities.
  • Promote compliance with National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards and Mater policies.
  • Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anaesthetists and the multidisciplinary team to deliver exceptional patient-centred care.
  • Act as a clinical resource and role model, demonstrating advanced problem-solving, decision-making and leadership capabilities.
